I was recently asked to bid on the VFX work for an upcoming short, starring a major Oscar nominated actor. The film was great and it was exciting to receive and be considered for. After reviewing the film and breaking down the work needed and costs - I was invited to talk to the Director/Producer. It was then explained to me that the film was “already over budget” and everyone else on the post side of things was either doing it for free, or at most, a $500 stipend.
If we treat our craft and career like it’s a hobby, that’s all it’ll ever be able to be. The race to the bottom is so slippery, now more so than ever. I know opportunities are exciting for us folks that have been gathering dust this past year, but be mindful of the precendents y’all set for yourselves and your peers - it’s contagious - and then this persons next film will also not leave any budget for post, and the cycle continues.
There isn’t a ton of VFX work needed, but at the low end, it’s easily $2K. I bid the work as such and likely will not be working on it.
