We are proud to announce that we have won the 2023 Banish Mercury Off the Planet contest for the 11th year in a row! Thermostat Recycling Corporation acknowledged our exceptional efforts in recycling mercury-containing thermostats. This was a collaborative effort of over 300 of our branch locations who all actively participated to collect over 65 pounds. Over the past 11 years, our dedication has resulted in an impressive collection of 1,406.5 pounds. Recycling mercury not only helps the environment but it’s the law. State and federal law requires that all mercury is properly recycled. We are proud to be play our part in committing to preserve our planet.

🥦 I like to think of recycling like broccoli. It’s green, it’s good for you, and it's a solution - but not for everything! To protect our health, we need to eat a balanced diet AND move our bodies, practice mindfulness, connect with loved ones, etc. To protect our planet and its people, we need to produce only what we need, reuse and recycle what we already have, compost our organics, etc. Recycling is only one piece of a broader solution strategy - a very important piece! So excited that The Recycling Partnership has put out this report highlighting real solutions for companies, communities, and policymakers to help the U.S. eat more broccoli, I mean, recycle more of our earth’s natural resources! Why leave it all up to the consumer? Why not move further upstream? Instead of measuring recycling rates, let's measure plastic and cardboard tonnage created by manufacturer and retailer, and hold our supply chains accountable. Municipalities pay by the ton, but no one else pays. America need a national policy supported by a national communication effort. Let's do more in 2024.

Fascinating to see the data so visually clear! Growing up in TN, recycling wasn't even a thing. I'm optimistic just by seeing separate bins in homes today (baby steps, clearly). I agree most people want to do their part - believing they’re doing it correctly or better sorting is handled at the local facility. I'm compelled by the "micro-regional system change" strategy. Obviously the data shows more communication, visuals, mailers, education helps. But to push on that, in a fast-moving household prior education still requires “thinking” at the moment of toss. I'm sure this is obvious, but I’d love to see an extremely "keep it simple stupid” market test. Something as simple (simply stated, at least) as a color coded mark/sticker on all products that correspond to the correct color bin to toss. I know it's MUCH more complicated than this. However, I like thinking there is a way to "simplify the toss,” a baby step towards change while Keefe Harrison, The Recycling Partnership, and many others continue incredible work driving systematic change. Fun to dream!

Did you know that #LeadBatteries are recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as the most recycled consumer product? At Stryten Energy, each lead battery produced in our U.S. manufacturing plants is made with 90 percent recycled material. And for every battery produced, Stryten recycles the equivalent of that battery through our North American-based recycling partners. Municipal Affairs at COA - Partnering with municipalities and transit authorities to provide cost-free infrastructure.
Great report and research on residential recycling! But public space recycling is becoming more important every day. The Beverage Packaging Environment Council reports that 31% of all beverage containers are consumed away from home. According to the APTA, 34 million times each weekday, people board public transportation. The fact that a quick Google search produces dozens of articles (even Bon Appetit chimes in) on eating on public transportation is a testament in itself, that many of those 34 million rides include food. Who hasn’t grabbed a Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, or Dutch Bros on their way to the bus stop? And to those of you who bring a tuna sandwich, the rest of us are begging you to stop. The point is that all those wrappers, cups, napkins, plastic utensils, leftovers, and bags have got to go somewhere. Some left on the ground, some left on the bus, and some left here and there. We’ve got a better place and it’s not a trash can that goes right to the landfill. A recycling bin. Recycling Across America notes that “recycling is the top action society can do to improve: the environment, the economy, sustainable manufacturing and to prevent waste from going into oceans.” A collaboration to join forces with COA can create a cleaner and more sustainable city. Our partnership is designed for high-traffic public space areas, complementing any residential curbside programs. It covers retail areas, commercial areas, and bus stops, where people tend to leave food bags, soda cans, coffee cups, and litter. Multi-stream recycling stations can reduce contamination by an average of 25%, which means fewer landfills, better property values, and cleaner air. COA has been in business for almost 40 years, and we are currently partnering with over 400 municipalities. We provide a hassle-free public recycling partnership that is both cost-free and maintenance-free. Modern infrastructure projects, and even recycling stations, require cost-efficient planning, financing, procurement, delivery, installation, and an ongoing maintenance and repair plan. A COA partnership may deliver better use of municipal resources.
