#Aerogel is recognized as the lightest solid in the world. It consists of silicon dioxide (SiO₂, silica) 1/10,000 the thickness of a string of hair, withstanding 2,000 times its weight and temperatures over 1,000℃. Aerogel is used in the pipes and industrial site facilities, significantly minimizing heat loss and preventing battery thermal runaway. Notably, its application as a thermal insulation material in space, energy, and EV batteries is rising. They are equipped with anodes made up of pure metals (i.e. lithium, zinc, magnesium, and aluminum) and an air cathode that is connected to an inexhaustible source of air. Due to their high theoretical energy density, MABs have been considered a strong cadidate for the next-generation electric vehicles. The currently existing MABs use rare and expensive metal catalysts for their air electrodes, such as platinum (Pt). This has hindered its further commercialization into the marketplace. As an alternative, perovskite catalysts that exhibit excellent catalyic performance has been proposed, yet there exists low activation barriers.

Tamping down thermal runaway in EVs. Did you know that thermoplastics from SABIC can potentially help suppress dangerous thermal runaway events in EV #batteries? At #NPE2024, we are releasing test results showing that our flame retardant STAMAX™ 30YH570 long glass fiber PP resin can help reduce the risk of cell-to-cell propagation leading to thermal runaway. That is exactly the case in the image we show here with cylindrical battery cells arranged within a thermal runaway barrier made of our STAMAX resin. After going through testing (after view), no propagation has taken place from the trigger cells (top left cell and bottom right cell) to the neighboring cells. At the #SABIC booth (S19005), you can examine a thermoplastic battery module box. Use of STAMAX 30YH570 resin for such an application can provide the thermal barrier and flame resistance capabilities.
