National History Day Utah is coming and the Utah Historical Society is looking for judges! Volunteering as a judge is a great way to help foster historical literacy and support Utah students. National History Day competitions are like science fairs—you don't have to be a subject matter expert to encourage kids and share their excitement. See contest dates and sign up here: bit.ly/3jafEeG Each year more than half a million students participate in the National History Day contest. Students choose a historical topic related to the annual theme, and then conduct primary and secondary research by looking through libraries, archives and museums, conducting oral history interviews, and visiting historic sites. They then present their work in one of five ways: as a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website. To celebrate NHD's 50th anniversary, this year's theme is "Turning Points in History." This theme invites students to consider questions of time and place, cause and effect, change over time, and impact and significance.

I was just reading Forbes higher-education contributor Derek Newton's new article about declining college tuition (you read that right) and was thinking about the fact that we need more colleges and universities to set big, hairy, audacious goals when it comes to affordability. And then like a genie serving up a wish when I needed it most, LinkedIn put Unity Environmental University president Dr. Melik Peter Khoury at the top of my feed. Please read this. THIS is what #HigherEducation leadership looks like. Right now, college and university presidents are busy announcing all kinds of capital campaigns and annual-fund campaigns, drumming up millions of dollars of donations for fancier dormitories, lazy rivers, and visiting professorships that make schools look more elite without ever adding meaningful value to the learner. But not so at Unity, where the fundraising is targeted at making a Unity education accessible and affordable (and even absolutely free) to more and more learners. Can you picture your college or university president holding tuition flat for five years and publicly saying that they are working to someday make their institution's degree programs free for all (no out-of-pocket expenses and no loans)? If not, that's telling .... and you might want to think about working for an institution where the mission is still about learning (in an accessible, affordable, supported, practical, impactful way), not just about an ever-increasing tuition price. Because for every leader who is enshrining the status quo in gold and doubling down on "we're expensive because we're elite!" is a true leader who understands the true purpose of higher education in leveling the playing field across communities and economies, and changing lives, families, and organizations through education. I have given a lot of money to colleges and universities in my career because I have degrees from four schools, I have worked for five higher-ed institutions, and have consulted to dozens of others. (I'm on a lot of mailing lists for a lot of fundraisers!) But I have NEVER before made a donation to a school with which I don't have a formal affiliation ... until today. I just donated to Unity's scholarship fund because I believe in Dr. Khoury. And in an era in which higher ed is being rocked by evolutions and revolutions (for better and for worse), leadership matters more now than ever. I can't help but wonder, "What if we all stopped giving money to our alma maters just because we have fond memories of being a student there in the PAST and started donating instead to the colleges and universities that are paving the way for the FUTURE of higher education?" #FoodForThought #PuttingMyMoneyWhereMyMouthIs

What are the stories we tell about ourselves? The social challenges of today are a complex product of our shared histories. How do we reclaim control over these stories? What can we learn from the past, in order to build a different future? In 2024, The Amsterdam Fellowship will focus on the theme: 'Reclaiming Narratives: Where History and Activism Meet to Pave the Future.'
