Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author of "The Unspoken Rules" (HBR) | Keynote speaker | Harvard career adviser | UC Berkeley faculty | First-gen
Tell me: When/how did you realize that doing well at work =/= doing your work well? Hidden expectations are all around us. These “rules” are what your manager, team, or client often expect… but don’t share. Trying to figure out what the “secrets” are in your new role or organization? Consider asking your manager: “I’m hoping to learn more about how to [complete task]. Is there anyone I could speak to who most recently touched these files? If so, might you be able to make an introduction?” Or, you can try: “I noticed that the files I’m working on came from [name]. Do you think you’d be able to introduce me to them? I’d like to learn more about how to ______.” A question like this can help you accomplish 3 things: (1) Show your manager that you are committed to doing your work competently (2) Get an intro from a higher-up, which can hold more weight than a cold email or message (3) Build a possible relationship with someone a step or two ahead of you who can be a guide Every organization, team, and person will be different. So don’t be afraid to tweak questions to fit your circumstances. The good news is that there are more ways than one to figure out #theunspokenrules —and in turn, create your own opportunities. For more, check out the video lessons and other tips from top thinkers at Big Think+! Thank you #BigThink for the opportunity to share my thoughts with your students and audience. #Promotion #CareerAdvice #CareerTips

"Stay Ahead with TEAMFRANCO: Your Go-To for IT Needs, Including Hardware, Software, and Datacenter Management"
iT1 - Best place to work. I have been a reseller for almost 16 years now. I worked a little over 11 years at my last employer, and I have been at iT1 for over 4 1/2 years. A couple of weeks ago, I was on a call with one of the owners and a customer. When I introduced the owner as technically my manager, he corrected me, stating that he was not my manager—my customers were my managers. I work for them, and they dictate my job and what I need to do. It's incredible to work for a company that truly believes and acknowledges that the customers come first and are actually our managers. iT1 has no quotas, no forecasting, no busywork, no company manager, and no micromanaging of their sales team. We only hire those who have been in the business for a while and understand the customer-first mentality. I am so proud to be part of the iT1 family. If you are looking for a sales job as an IT reseller and love taking care of everything yourself—from speccing out the project, getting the quote, negotiating the discounts for your customers, and understanding that it's all about the customer—then you should take a look at iT1. When I was ready to leave my last job and was looking for a new permanent home, I asked someone in the industry I had worked with for a long time if they knew a good place for me. Knowing how I worked and how important my customers were to me, they said without missing a beat that there is only one place for me, and that is iT1. #BestPlaceToWork #CustomerFirst #ProudToBeiT1 #SalesTeam #ITJobs #iT1 #it1source #it1consulting iT1 #TEAMFRANCO Malinda Franco #ITreseller #IThardware #ITsoftware #ITmanagedservices #NOC

It was a great day at the great place! My team and I had the privilege of attending Texas A&M's Staff Enrichment Day for the Division of Finance and Business Services which included three topics of interest: Wellness, Managing the Madness, and Taking the Lead (even without the title). Here are my top takeaways that I hope you can also apply to your daily life: 1. The greatest leaders are often the greatest public servants. 2. Equitable workload does not always mean equal workload. 3. There is no success in the workplace that can make up for failure in the home.

I'm still buzzing from the opportunity to see Jude and Marcus speak 2 weeks ago. I left the event inspired about the work that we do and how to continue to push the conversations forward on how we treat and use data in our day to day work. As Dr. Marcus Collins challenged us..."We don't see the world as 'what' it is, we see the world as "WHO we are". Noodling on that will expand your horizons of how you approach the work that you do regardless of part of the 'organization' you are with. I'm left with these additional nuggets of wisdom from the talk from both Dr. Marcus Collins and Judith Carr-Rodriguez... 1 - Consumption is a CULTURAL act. 2 - Don't mistake information for intimacy. 3 - Shakespeare was right - "All the world's a stage, and we are merely [SOCIAL] actors." 4 - Stories of 'failure' generally result in stories of innovation. 5 - Don't confuse kindness with weakness. 6 - Good storytelling and creativity is 'messy' - it is likely clear at the beginning, messy in the middle and magical by the end. 7 - The messy middle is necessary! 8 - Sometimes the obvious isn't obvious until it's pointed out. #alwayslearning #4As
