Happy Thanksgiving break boilers! We hope you are all taking some time to refresh and spend time with loved ones. This Wednesday’s Women of the Week “Internship Edition” features Rachel Spear. Rachel is a Sophomore majoring in Supply Chain and Operations Management with a concentration in Data Analytics.
This past summer, Rachel had the opportunity to intern at Crown Equipment, one of the top forklift manufacturers in the world where she was a Supply Chain Intern working with the Materials department. When she was asked what her favorite part was, she said it was visiting their headquarters in Ohio. She said, “I loved being able to job shadow a variety of positions related to my major and meeting interns from different locations across the US.”
Additionally, when questioned about what courses at Purdue she felt best prepared her for her internship, she responded by saying, “Having gotten this internship after freshman year, I had not completed any major specific courses. However, I quickly realized that CS 235, Introduction to Organizational Computing, would play a significant role in my day-to-day projects and tasks. Being proficient in Excel was crucial to almost every project I worked on and helped me to go beyond expectations.”
Lastly, Rachel was asked if she knew what career she wanted to pursue before her internship or if her internship helped her set that path. She replied saying, “I knew that I wanted to pursue a career related to supply chain management. However, I didn’t know if I would enjoy purchasing or operations more. My internship mainly involved operations management, but I was still able to learn about both positions. I was also able to job shadow someone in a purchasing position. Through this experience, I found that I enjoy operations more than purchasing in general. I learned I also have an interest in international trade and logistics.”
It is always great to learn about other Daniels students’ internship experiences! If you or someone you know is interested in being featured for a W.O.W “Internship Edition” post, please fill out an interest form with the link in our Instagram bio! Happy holidays and Boiler Up! 💛
