Manufacturing Automation – Setting the boundary. Automation is nice, Productivity is better! For all Hi-MIX-LowVolume automation in SME manufacturing, setting the Man-Machine boundary is always a challenge and determines fundamental factors of success, including: - System Costs. - System Complexity. - System Simplicity & Reliability. - User Skill Set Requirements. - Maintainability & Uptime. Seeking more than functionality, which is routinely expected, the BEST EMBODIMENT is measured by the METRIC of maximized PRODUCTIVITY! Achieving this balance is complex as it involves comingling DEXTERITY, PERCEPTION, POWER and PRECISION and now complicated by an AI (read programming), layer which promises to make this comingling not only POSSIBLE but actually DESIRABLE and if it doesn’t quite immediately pass the PRODUCTIVITY test, well … just wait for a bit more machine learning and “teaching”. The Trap! At any point in time, the underlying process capability is determined by the physical hardware that performs it, at least in the Newtonian world where we perform physical work, and as such, automating functions of dexterity and perception increase costs and complexity while reducing reliability … counter to PRODUCTIVITY and veer into AUTOMATING THE WORKER rather than THE PROCESS. Certainly, incorporating well sized vision systems, flexible tooling and gripping, adequate flexibility in range of motions and flexible HMI interfaces to simplify inputs to accommodate a range of SKUs of a product family do increase PRODUCTIVITY as these minimize setups, reduce operator skill sets and simplify maintenance but these are benefits of a well drawn MAN-MACHINE interface at the system architectural level upfront. As the tech sirens of Autonomy, AI and Machine Learning mislead automation efforts and in most cases make the project non-viable technically or financially for SMEs, making it a “virtual” ALL or NOTHING proposition ... just below that level, introducing worker enabling automation with tried and proven technology is not only ACCESSIBLE but VIABLE while meeting the increased PRODUCTIVITY metric. Automation is nice, Productivity is better! -- “The extend to which automation eliminates the 3Ds, as it very often does, is not a reason to automate but the incidental benefit of automating a “good” process." -- What is your main driver for deploying automation? Manufacturing Automation – It’s not magic. Persistent iteration and discipline! Unlike the scientific method, adding to our understanding of some “universal truth”, Manufacturing Automation lies somewhere between TINKERING and good if not PERFECT design and integrates known technology, process domain knowledge and a bit of persistent hard work. Like a LEGO kit or a PUZZLE, with perhaps several end points of completion and we know we have reached a suitable conclusion where the solution is matched to the SPECIFIC APPLICATION at hand. We know that we have a good configuration when some, defined, REAL WORLD problem is solved, improving productivity. Informed by previous experience with similar problems or simply COPYING and IMPROVING some previous iteration, we might also get LUCKY and integrate an innovation, made possible by technology availability or RE-FRAMING the problem. Here’s the rub: Since the impetus for developing a solution is not academic but practical, prototyping or even a PILOT phase of automation needs to be structured so that “SUCCESS” is pre-defined and not an OPEN ENDED development. That definition may include: 1. Clear definition of the problem. 2. Simplest Viable Solution performance needed. 3. Ability to say, STOP!, this is “good enough”! Prototyping is iterative with each successive form yielding additional data/insights and having defined 1 and 2 above, 3 generally goes something like: A series of WE DON'T HAVE IT YET, yielding a first YES, WE HAVE IT and then we STOP as we have a FUNCTIONAL minimum solution to the defined problem. Otherwise, he proverbial PILOT PURGATORY can ensue … fine for an academic exercise, but of little value in practical and productivity increasing automation. Just persistent iteration and discipline! -- “Amounting anywhere from 2% to 20% of total automation system development costs, prototyping is an investment that mitigates new equipment development risks while also potentially simplifying the entire system design through form factor definition and system performance and reliability. Prototyping the assembly tooling and automation is Cheap Development Insurance!” -- Do you use prototyping in your automation projects? Feel the Difference – Automate Boring Work – RPA & AI - Productivity by Automation - Software Robots
How to design a new business process without legacy thinking? Are there new requirements for your business? (Carbon tracking, FRC, Employee office days) Changes in business activity generate the need for a new process. By adopting an “𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁” mindset when examining the requirements for a new process, the business goals can be met with practical approaches that use the skills of people and the capability of robots. If it was manufacturing production line or warehouse operation, automation would be a core requirement. In an office environment, software robots can deliver similar automation. Walking through a new process manually is a great way to verify: ▬ that it is complete ▬ how errors should be handled ▬ where any time constraints might apply This information can be used to specify the development of a software robot to automate parts or all of the processing. A new process might come from: 🟢 Business opportunity 🟢 Compliance with the law 🟢 Improvements to quality 🟢 Enabling “Green” or “Carbon” objectives to be achieved 🟢 Controlling risk There are some good tools available to help document processes and many good “Process Experts” available as consultants. By designing task automation into a process at the outset, people and software robots can work together to deliver the best business outcomes. Digital Transformation can be a big challenge. Whereas a new process provides the opportunity to create 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 to support people’s activities from the start. As automation specialist we believe in considering: 🟢 Time when processing takes place (Robots can work 24x7) 🟢 Exceptions 🟢 The unusual 🟢 Error handling 🟢 Manual transition from a software robot 🟢 Software Robot hand-off for manual processing 🟢 Deploying AI where it can add value To optimise the 80:20 rule typical allocation of tasks can have real benefits. Good design will "Keep people in the loop", using people skills effectively.
