Apply for that job even if you don't meet all the requirements. Storytime: Some months ago, I saw a job posting for a Comms officer position at a local NGO that required C1 English (check! ✔) and C1 German (not there yet! ⭕). I emailed the director of the organization asking if they could still consider my application given my experience. He replied they needed a fluent German speaker. I insisted. He then suggested we meet for an informal chat and coffee. That café conversation ended up lasting two hours and the director invited me to a formal job interview alongside one of the managers. During that second talk, I shared a list of PR/social media ideas and proposed ways in which we could sort out the language barrier. They were pleased with my enthusiasm and called me again. While the final stage interview went well, the hiring team revealed they were also considering another strong candidate. In the end, I didn’t get the job. But I gained other things: ➡️ A valuable connection with fellow professionals in my field and in my new city ➡️ An open door for future collaborations ➡️ Insights on what a hiring process with clear feedback looks like ➡️ Proof that commitment and passion can take you a long way In short: I made it to the last round despite not meeting a key requirement for the position. So... APPLY. FOR. THAT. JOB. This goes especially for women. There is no such thing as the perfect candidate. Ask questions, persist, engage, negotiate, connect. Something good will come out of that.
