Let’s talk about how ecommerce is affecting road safety. More online shopping = more delivery vans on the road.
Since it’s #NationalSafetyMonth, I wanted to share this recent study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Biggest takeaway for me is that advanced #vehiclesafety features could prevent or reduce nearly 40% of fatal crashes involving work vans.
Our Ford #Transit and #ETransit come standard with 2 of the 4 features outlined in this study: front crash prevention and lane departure prevention (blind spot detection is also available as an add-on). All these help drivers to avoid common accidents.
Read more about the importance of these safety features below. Great to keep in mind for those adding new vans to their fleet!
The cost of not being safety minded is becoming very clear to so many businesses. It can crush your business, if not managed properly. Simple changes like having driver safety technology standard on XL trim, help make the Ford Pro commercial vehicles your secret weapon to reduce accident rates and most importantly driver injuries!!!
Ted Cannis the statistics on the second page about AEB systems is eye-opening. What are your thoughts on the NHTSA standard announced in April about increased functionality for AEB systems in low light conditions? Do you anticipate that will help make fleet and delivery operations safer overall?
Limited hiring of great Data Scientists and Full Stack Developers wanting to be part of Big AutoTech as we move into the period of the Software Defined Vehicle experience.
It is interesting to realize that the % of vehicles on the road that are commercial continues to grow every year. Bringing state of the art safety to all vehicles but especially commercial vehicles is vitally important to our overall road safety.

Effective January 1, 2024, intrastate motor carriers and drivers are required to use an electronic logging device (ELD) to record a driver’s record of duty status (RODS).
Here’s a few of the key provisions
🚚 Intrastate Motor Carriers and Drivers Required to Use an ELD…
• All motor carriers and drivers, including those operating in intrastate commerce, are required to use an ELD to record a driver’s RODS, pursuant to Title 13 of the California Code of Regulations (CCR), Section 1213(a)(1), unless otherwise exempted.
• Adoption of Federal ELD Regulations. Pursuant to Title 13, CCR, Section 1213.3, both interstate and intrastate motor carriers and drivers must comply with the federal ELD regulations adopted under Title 49, CFR, Part 395, Subpart B, as those regulations now exist or are hereafter amended.
🚚 Exemption to the ELD Requirement…
Pursuant to Title 13, CCR, Section 1213(a)(3), drivers meeting any one of the following conditions are not required to use an ELD:
• Driver is operating a commercial motor vehicle in a manner requiring completion of RODS no more than eight (8) days within any 30-day period.
• Driver is in driveaway-towaway operation (transporting empty vehicles for sale, lease, or repair), provided the vehicle driven is part of the shipment being delivered.
• The vehicle being driven was manufactured before model year 2000, as reflected in the vehicle identification number and as shown on the vehicle’s registration.
🚚 The 100 Air-Mile (Local) Driver Radius Exemption is Not Changing….
• The ELD RODS requirement does not alter the 100 air-mile (local) driver radius exemption for intrastate drivers contained in Title 13, CCR, Section 1212(e). Additionally, interstate drivers may continue to utilize the 150 air-mile radius exemption for “short-haul operations” contained in Title 49, CFR, Section 395.1(e).

A campaign to help increase awareness regarding safe driving habits around commercial vehicles is underway in Pennsylvania.
On July 11, the Pennsylvania State Police held a news conference to provide details about the awareness and enforcement campaign taking place along Interstate-81. According to officials, the Together, We Make I-81 Safer campaign is a multistate initiative helping to “discourage unsafe driving behaviors” that lead to crashes with commercial motor vehicles.
The three-month campaign, which began in June and runs through August, will see “extra patrols and proactive traffic enforcement” along the entirety of the I-81 corridor.
In June, Pennsylvania State Police conducted two separate five-day enforcement periods, making 1,154 traffic stops along I-81. Officials say those stops resulted in 1,322 traffic citations and 1,119 written warnings being issued. Additionally, 299 commercial vehicles were inspected during the safety enforcement efforts.
“Keeping the roads of the commonwealth safe is the core mission of the Pennsylvania State Police. And it’s not something we do alone,” Major Robert Krol, director of the PSP bureau of patrol, said during the event. “Together, we all work towards promoting safe vehicle operation by all operators of vehicles on the highways – commercial, noncommercial, motorcycles – it doesn’t matter what the vehicle is, we look for safety by all operators because they’re all interacting together and need to share the road appropriately.”

Usage data from individual vehicles is personal data, it can be used for all sorts of beneficial purposes. But when a manufacturer captures it and uses it without permission... this is Smart Data in reverse!

Is this future of transport?
Not only car manufacturers will share driving data with whoever pays more (never mind the interest of the driver, their dear customer), but also aim to turn driving into an “online game for drivers to compete”.
Will it be for the World Cup of Safety?
Why don’t they simply share it’s a new line of revenue and monetisation?
Wouldn’t it make more sense to be transparent and let their customers opt-out?
Why fool them?
Safety has nothing to do with it.
It’s not hard to infer the real incentive:
“[Renault] Drivers are able to choose not to use the software but the my have to reconfirm this every time they start the car. It cannot be permanently switched off”.
Golden data for insurance companies to justify fee uplifts for “poor” driving.

The common perception often unfairly places the blame on commercial drivers for most collisions on the roads. However, according to this report by the Ontario Provincial Police reveals that 86% of the crashes involving trucks this year actually caused by the 𝐧𝐨𝐧-𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬.
While it is crucial for commercial drivers to undergo regular training, it is equally important for non-commercial drivers to exercise caution and vigilance when sharing the road with large trucks and commercial vehicles.
All individuals operating vehicles on highways must prioritize defensive driving practices and adhere to safety measures, with a key emphasis on avoiding distractions while behind the wheel.
The Ontario Provincial Police and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation/ Ministère des Transports de l’Ontario (MTO) are teaming up in bringing “𝑶𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑺𝒂𝒇𝒆 𝑫𝒓𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑾𝒆𝒆𝒌” from July 7-13, across North America to monitor drivers on risky behaviors.

Why choose DaleVernHart Logistic LLC for your delivery needs.? Why not just rent a U-Haul, and do it yourself?
The answer is simple. TIME!
Imagine all the better things you could be doing with your time!
Instead, you could be doing those things, you love, and enjoy doing.
Picture this:
Waking up, knowing you got to go rent a U-Haul to:
(a.)Pickup Furniture
(b.)Get to and from The Fair or PoP-Up Shop etc…
(c.) Pick up home improvement items from Lowe’s or Home Depot
(d.) Pick up manufacturing supplies
(e.) Pick up Rims and Tires…..The list is endless.
Imagine dealing with the cashier with a bad attitude early in the morning. You thought you
were going to pay $19.99 for the Van, but the rental comes with numerous hidden fees, and a
deposit. Once you get the van, you have no one to drive your car, so you park your
car at the rental car place; putting your car at risk of getting side swiped by an uninsured driver.
Imagine the Pick up and Delivery Process.
Moving your Merchandise to the fair, or going to pick-up your Items..
All the time you spend, picking up and dropping off your items.
The hardwork of, putting your items back in the van; all the lifting, and sweating.
Getting scars, scraps and bruising…….the agonizing pain of dropping a dresser on your big toe…or slamming a finger in the door. Dropping, or breaking your items.
Next thing you know, it’s 9:00 or 10:00pm and you’re finally getting done. You’re exhausted.
The cost and deposit of the rental van, would have paid for the complete service that
DaleVernHart provides. “In most cases” You could have left the labor up to us, and been enjoying your day, doing the things you love to do.
The cost you paid not only cost you a pretty penny, time, blood, sweat, and tears. But, costed you a Peace of Mind!! Which, in any case, is PRICELESS!
