School leaders in California, here's a development to be aware of: Starting in 2025, the California Science Test (CAST) will be factored into the state dashboard. 📊 This move shines a spotlight on science as a core subject area on par with English, math, and graduation rates. Schools' science performance, including individual student growth data, will now impact their overall rating color. 📝 For principals and administrators, this raises the imperative to prioritize high-quality, standards-based science instruction through strategic investments in areas like teacher professional development, integrated STEM curricula and targeted interventions guided by data. 🔬 Be proactive in enhancing your school's science programming to meet this new benchmark and demonstrate a commitment to comprehensive STEM learning for all students. New publication out today in Reading and Writing Quarterly. We interviewed middle school science teachers about how they supported their students with disabilities through effective literacy practices. Teachers reported a lack of professional development and support in this area, as well as difficulties explicitly naming literacy practices. It's clear that more work need to be done to give science teachers the tools to use literacy strategies to improve science understanding. It's especially imported as we more into more STEM focused careers. https://lnkd.in/eTZxKeZr

Background knowledge in students is critical for reading comprehension- and kids build that in science and social studies lessons. It’s synergistic- these subjects work together, and also create real-life reading, writing, and math situations. Teachers need rich texts in science and social studies topics for students to read and write about, and students need to see how math and mathematical thinking is used every day in science discoveries that directly impact their lives, and how math is actually built on historical discoveries. We cannot afford to continue to short-change these topics as it directly undercuts the work on other topics, too. I would say, too, that many early social studies materials that only focus on self and community miss out on children’s natural curiosity for the bigger world and what people “used to do”, too- and some are intellectually shallow. Rich history for kids is amazing. Kids are also natural scientists as they observe and test their worlds, and they need rich opportunities to observe, test, understand, and build the background knowledge… that consistently makes them better readers, writers, and mathematicians.

While summer learning programs are getting underway, it’s not too late to incorporate the Science of Reading into what your library has planned. We know that summer learning programs in public libraries can be a vital resource for maintaining and improving early literacy skills, as well as help close achievement gaps brought about by systemic barriers in education. As Harvard researchers noted in 2013, summer reading interventions can especially have a positive impact on the reading comprehension ability of low-income children. In a new blog post on the Urban Libraries Council blog, learn about 5 ways libraries can easily integrate the science of reading into existing summer programming. https://lnkd.in/eVhDQNwT

I'm on a mission to innovate math education through relevant, radical, and restorative practices and strategies.
So the green banner is down. I've accepted a 7th Grade Math position with KIPP Mosaic Academy, and I'm infinitely grateful to get to be back in front of students soon. I thought I'd be trailblazing from outside the classroom. I thought that I had reached past my own capacity for burnout, that I had "graduated" from classroom teaching. But then I realized that we don't need another former teacher telling teachers what they "should be doing" from inside their cubicles. And that I honestly don't want to preach anything I'm not practicing. We need someone in the trenches, actually making it work with students who are routinely 2-3 grade levels behind. We need someone who refuses to lose touch with what works for kids. We need someone who cares enough about teacher burnout to create and teach systems to avoid it, because resigning is not the solution when you have a true calling. I'm recommitting myself every day to being that person, to showing up in the classroom and sharing what I do along the way in the hopes that it can impact other math teachers and other classrooms. I don't think I'm the end all, be all when it comes to this. I still feel like I'm yelling into the void, writing to myself to stop the overthinking. I'd very much like to not be the only voice this loud. ------- Follow me here on LinkedIn for: - relevant, radical, and restorative strategies to transform your math classroom - reflections on my teaching practice and math education - more of my "screaming into the void" thoughts #linkedincreator #matheducation #taughtbyelle #realradrest

Mathimals: An Exciting Adventure Through Numbers and Animals Preschool Printable visit our store https://bit.ly/3QbQIRE Dear Learner, As the author of the Alphabet Poster: A Math and Animal Adventure, I am delighted to introduce you to this educational resource. With a deep passion for teaching and a belief in the power of interdisciplinary learning, I created this poster to inspire young minds and foster a love for both mathematics bible story and reading. Within the colorful pages of this poster, do-maker coloring children will encounter a fascinating world where animals and mathematics come together. Each letter of the sight word alphabet is beautifully represented by an animal, offering a unique opportunity to explore mathematical concepts through the lens of the animal kingdom. Through this integration of reading and mathematics, children will develop essential skills such as counting, shape recognition, pattern identification, and measurement. By appreciating the intricate connections between these disciplines, young learners can develop a holistic understanding that will support their academic growth and curiosity. I designed this poster with the hope of creating a captivating and immersive experience for children. It serves as a visual tool that can be displayed in classrooms, homes, or any learning environment, sparking conversations, promoting engagement, and igniting a sense of wonder. I invite educators, parents, and caregivers to utilize this Alphabet Poster as a catalyst for learning and exploration to improve their handwriting. Let us embark on this Math and Animal Adventure together, celebrating the interconnectedness of reading and mathematics while nurturing a lifelong love for learning. Thank you for joining me on this journey. May the Alphabet Poster: A Math and Animal Adventure inspire young minds and open new pathways of discovery and understanding. I would like to share our latest research on Complex Systems in Education 🎓A big thanks to my co-authors Martin Crane and Marija Bezbradica Blagojevic 🙏 for their expertise and dedication to this study. I also appreciate the editors from the Entropy journal who have invited us to publish this study as an open-access article for free of charge. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next steps in this research. In this study, we introduce entropy-based metrics as a novel manner to represent students’ learning behaviours. Employing these metrics, in conjunction with a proven community detection method, we undertake an analysis of learning behaviours across higher- and lower-performing student communities. Our findings reveal that students in higher-performing communities typically tend to have lower volatility in entropy values and reach stable learning states earlier than their lower-performing counterparts. This study provides evidence of the use of entropy as a simple yet insightful metric for educators to monitor study progress, enhance understanding of student engagement, and enable timely interventions. What's the best approach to help students recover those foundational literacy skills weakened by remote learning 🤔? The short answer is, at Springfield Prep, we've taken an all-hands-on-deck approach! In his piece, "Science teachers, math teachers, history teachers — we’re all reading teachers now", 5th Grade Science teacher, Ian Hartigan, reflects on the return to in-person learning and how recovering literacy skills quickly became a priority: "'Challenging' doesn’t even begin to describe the circumstances teachers were confronted with coming out of remote learning. Our school’s approach to reading instruction may not be perfect, but we are trying with everything we have to help our kids get back on track. The resilience and creativity of educators, students, and school leaders nationwide make recovery possible. It makes me proud to be a science teacher who teaches reading, too."
