There are many unknowns in the #adventure of finding a #therapist, regardless of whether or not you have prior experience with therapy or not. It can be easy to feel unsure & back off from asking for help, simply because it can feel confusing. Hopefully, these uncertainties don’t become barriers to getting the #help you need. When it comes to finding the right therapist for you, it's important to keep in mind that what works for someone else may not work for you. There are several factors to consider, such as the therapy style that suits you best, the chemistry between you and the therapist, and whether your therapeutic alliance is aligned. Don't hesitate to shop around and try different therapists until you find the one that's right for you. I’ve been thinking a lot about the anti-therapy articles floating around the internet over the past few weeks. In my mind, seeing a therapist is not like seeing a dentist - it’s not necessarily something that everyone should do regularly. That said, it could be incredibly harmful to imply that therapy - at the right time, with the right therapist - doesn’t play a significant, transformative role in the lives of the people it touches. As therapists, we are privileged to co-create safe, trusting spaces with our clients, ones in which they can try on new behaviors, practice them, and ultimately build skills. Ideally, our work together allows them to embrace flexibility and creativity as they continue to evolve as humans. Sometimes this happens so slowly that it is barely perceptible, sometimes change happens in seismic shifts. If change and growth aren’t happening, it’s not the right therapy, therapist, or time for that particular client to be engaging in therapy - or maybe not therapy at all. So no, therapy is not for everyone, at all times - and it makes sense to be sure that when you’re in therapy, that it is resulting in change, even if that change is slow and messy. If this growth isn’t happening as a result of therapy, it’s worthwhile asking yourself (and your therapist) some tough questions. Alma created a helpful guide with questions and resources for people that may be wondering if therapy is right for them. Do you feel connected with your therapist? Is your therapist’s therapeutic approach working for you? Does your therapist understand and support your goals- your personal “why” for starting therapy?
