An interesting voice in what modern education should (and shouldn't) do on a state level, straight from the UK Parliament. The Education Committee for 11-16 education just released the report stating that British education requires "urgent change." This is not surprising, but its recommendations can surprise more than a few people. Key highlights of the recommendations - More creative, technical, and vocational learning - Reduced #GCSE curricula content - More subject choices (and scrapping English Baccalaureate) - Less focus on exams and inclusion of non-exam assessments - On-screen examinations - Improvements in #literacy and #numeracy (interestingly separated from calling them English and Math). Few of those sound just like someone has finally seen what #MYP is all about, but in my opinion the most interesting recommendation is strengthening creative, technical, and vocational learning at the clear expense of reducing the amount of knowledge imparted. In May 2024 Gillian Keegan, the education secretary at the time, delivered a speech at the Education World Forum. As might be expected she considered a number of themes such as post covid recovery and sustainability in education. What I want to focus on here is her reliance on a positivist world view which has been such a feature of neoliberalism. At one point she says that, "The answer is clear: share what you know works." She goes on to say that, "The UK government has done this in education in the last decade, with some great results. As a country, we weren’t always known for our maths prowess. English pupils ranked 27th in the world for maths in 2009, according to PISA." Giroux (2020:29-30) in reflecting on positivism in education argues that "Wrapped in the logic of fragmentation and specialization, positivist rationality divorces ‘fact’ from its social and historical context and ends up glorying scientific methodology at the expense of a more rationale mode of thinking." One of the key points here is that a 'what works' focus can ignore the morality of what it is that is deemed to be 'working' (Biesta, 2003). It is also worth considering what Husserl referred to as the “fallacy of objectivism”. In this he was arguing that if we are unable, or unwilling, to reflect on our own presuppositions the status quo and rejecting history are rejected as a site for political action. Again I am wondering about the extent to which Keegan reflects on her own presuppositions or worse accepts the presuppositions 'given' to her in the conservative chain of command. What do others think? https://lnkd.in/dfR4HGhE
