🔄 Creating a Virtuous Circle in Actuarial and Financial Reporting 🔄 Last week, I shared some takeaways from the first article in a series on life modeling and technology, which touched on how small investments can lead to significant savings, creating a cycle that funds even larger gains. 🚨 Avoiding “Tech Traps” 🚨 The second article looks at the “technological traps” that can derail our progress. These traps often arise from iterative quick fixes or creative solutions to flawed processes, stemming from us chasing specific goals without considering the bigger picture. Here are a few key takeaways: 1️⃣ Self-Build Models Benefit: Exciting projects, leveraging open-source tools and programming languages. Trap: Overlooking non-functional requirements can limit your ability to scale and optimise. Such models can create data-security and corporate governance issues and can exhibit unexpected behaviour under stress. Future-proofing is also an issue, due to lack of automatic tech update roll-outs and risk of developers leaving and a black box model remaining. 2️⃣ Solutions driven solely by New Tech Benefit: Short-term gains, “cutting-edge” solutions. Trap: Risks in early tech adoption which may prevent long-term value realization. Uncertainty around continued provider continuity / support. 3️⃣ Tech Attachment blocking positive change Challenge: Teams can become overly attached to familiar 'safe' tech, blocking objective evaluation of newer, better solutions. Insight: Often, improvements focus on tools leaders know best, not those that offer the greatest business benefit. 4️⃣ People Challenges vs. Tech Challenges Warning: Tech issues might actually stem from underlying people challenges. Simply replacing tech without addressing these issues can lead to recurring problems and/or failed implementation. 5️⃣ Misused Automation Observation: If your automation is simply shoring up existing processes rather than streamlining them, you may be putting the cart before the horse. This can make reporting slower, riskier, and more expensive. 🗝 The key takeaway? Technology is powerful, but it’s only as effective as the processes and people behind it. Let’s ensure we’re not just chasing the latest tech, but building sustainable, holistic solutions.
