75%. 75% of an annual salary. That is the cost of employee turnover. I recently attended a meeting where an HR guru shared this statistic, and it got me thinking about the high turnover rate of nonprofit fundraising professionals. On average, every 16 to 24 months (depending on which survey you read), a nonprofit will hire another fundraising professional due to turnover. If the 75% statistic is true, this high turnover rate is costing hard-won donor money over and over and over. We can do better, nonprofit community! Communities suffer as nonprofits nationwide continue to struggle to fill important jobs within their organizations. A survey conducted in April 2023 by the networks of the National Council of Nonprofits showed that three-quarters (74.6%) of the 1,600+ nonprofits had job vacancies. More than half reported more vacancies in April 2023 compared to March 2020, or before the COVID-19 pandemic. Had an interesting conversation with a board member of an organization yesterday. They wanted to hire a fundraiser to work on commission only. While this may seem like a reasonable request in the corporate world, it is actually unethical and in some states even illegal. Nonprofits operate on a different set of principles than for-profit businesses, and working on commission goes against those principles. However, this conversation got me thinking about performance-based incentives in the nonprofit sector. As someone who once raised millions of dollars for an organization and only received a $750 annual salary raise, I strongly believe in rewarding great performance for staff, not just fundraisers. So, how do we create a middle ground? How can we incentivize great performance without compromising the values of the nonprofit sector?
