West Virginia High School Basketball - Pocahontas County topples East Hardy
December 9, 2015: Baker, WV 26801 In Wednesday's league outing, the Pocahontas County Warriors (Dunmore, WV) basketball squad beat the host East Hardy Cougars (Baker, WV), by a count of 50-42.
The Warriors (1-1) will now prepare for their outing against Summers County (Hinton, WV). The Bobcats go into the non-league outing with a 2-0 record. In their last outing, Summers County defeated James Monroe (Lindside, WV), 87-38, in a league outing.
The Cougars now hold a 0-1 record. They play next when they host Moorefield for a Potomac Valley outing on Friday, December 11. East Hardy will clash with a Yellowjackets squad coming off a 55-46 league win over Pendleton County (Franklin, WV). The Yellowjackets record now stands at 2-0.
First Quarter
The very next night (December 9)after losing to (3-0) #3-ranked Class A Tucker County, PCHS boarded buses to Baker (just under 3 hours one-way) to face East Hardy, who vastly improved over last year's season, and now has one senior on varsity with nine sophomores who played varsity and improved last year as freshmen.
Second Quarter
East Hardy led PCHS in the contest until the Lady Warriors tied the game early in the second quarter at 10-10. From that point on PCHS never trailed, but the Cougars would come within three points several times. The final score last Wednesday was a 50-42 PCHS win. EHHS lost both games last season by 66-25 at PCHS early and by only 51-38 in early February at Baker. East Hardy drops to (0-2) with a previous loss to strong Paige County VA.
Fourth Quarter
PCHS junior all-stater Sarah Ryder was game high scorer with 24 points and 15 rebounds, followed by junior all-PVC first teamer Melissa Murphy with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Leading EHHS were sophomores Julia Hahn with 12 points and Maxine Cassell with 10 points.
