Video: Trevor Lawrence highlights
See the Clemson standout when he starred at Cartersville.
High school football has been around for nearly 150 years, and during that time, the passing game has been playing catch-up.
The running game has long been the staple in the high school game with its first 10,000-yard rusher arriving in 1953 in the form of back Ken Hall. He ran for 11,232 yards in his four seasons at Sugar Land (Texas) and he held the career yardage record for nearly 60 years.
Meanwhile, the passing game lagged behind. The year before Hall ran for his record total, fellow Texan Doyle Traylor of Temple became, what is believed to be, the first 5,000-yard career passer with 5,188 yards in 1952.
There wasn't a 6,000-yard passer until 1968 when future Buffalo Bill Joe Ferguson of Woodlawn (La.) threw for 6,710 career yards. Two years later, Pat Haden of Bishop Amat (La Puente, Calif.) finished with 7,633 career yards and Ron Cuccia of Wilson (Los Angeles) set the next milestone with 8,804 yards in 1977.
Todd Marinovich of Capistrano Valley (Calif.) and Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) became the first 9,000-yard passer with 9,182 yards in 1987. In 1991, Chad Davis of Mira Mesa (San Diego, Calif.) broke Marinovich's record with 9,332 career yards.
Josh Booty of Evangel Christian (Shreveport, La.) finally broke through the 10,000-yard barrier with 11,700 career yards in 1993.
Since Booty became the inaugural member of the 10,000-yard club, the membership has grown exponentially. While only nine other players have joined Hall in the 10,000-yard rushing club, a total of 180 passers have joined Booty in the 10,000-yard passing club.
Tim Couch of Leslie County (Ky.) passed Booty as the all-time passing leader with 12,167 yards in 1996 and J.R. House of Nitro (W. Va.) passed Couch in 1998 with 14,457 yards. Since 2002, the all-time passing yardage mark has belonged in the Mauk family with Ben setting the record in 2002 with 17,364 yards and brother Maty taking over in 2011 with 18,932 yards.
The 10,000-yard club includes multiple current professional quarterbacks, including DeShaun Watson of Gainesville (Ga.) at No. 30, Mason Rudolph of Northwestern (Rock Hill, S.C.) at No. 97, and Kyler Murray of Allen (Texas) at No. 146. Others include No. 1 overall draft pick Joe Burrow of Athens (The Plains, Ohio) at No. 76 and 2020 draft pick Jake Fromm of Houston County (Warner Robins, Ga.) at No. 34.
A pair of quarterbacks from the Class of 2021 are already on the list with Ty Keyes of Taylorsville (Miss.) at No. 48 and Sam Huard of Kennedy Catholic (Burien, Wash.) at No. 62.
