SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - Storms Sunday will be more widespread with frequent lightning and some heavy downpours,

Rain Saturday was feast or famine regarding rain totals. SRQ picked up another 1.60″ rainfall while southern Sarasota only reported 0.09″, northern Lakewood Ranch only 0.01″. Thunderstorms will flare up again Sunday, as early as lunchtime, continuing for late afternoon and evening hours. Then rain chances drop during the work week, especially as we get to the 4th of July on Thursday.

Hurricane Beryl will strengthen rapidly Sunday as it moves into the Caribbean. By late Sunday it is likely to become a Category 3 storm with winds near 120 mph, a major hurricane as it crosses the Windward Islands on Monday. The cone has the track south of Cuba and near Jamaica by late Wednesday. On this track, Beryl is no threat to the Suncoast. The National Hurricane Center is also tracking two more disturbances, one near the Yucatan area of Mexico with a 50% chance of developing, and another closer to the African coast with a 70% chance of developing in the next 7 days.
