BRADENTON, Fla. (WWSB) - Five guide and service dogs boarded onto the Gulf Islands Ferry on Tuesday for real-life exercises.

The ADA accessible training was a collaboration between nonprofit, Dogs Inc, and the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

During the event, the dogs practiced tasks like navigating ADA-accessible ramps, got acclimated to different walking surfaces, and became exposed to the smells, sounds and sights of traveling by boat.

For many, service dogs are their lifeline. Like in Ed Burton’s case. He has spent two and a half years with guide dog, Sully.

“She’s already saved my life twice by not allowing me to cross an intersection because of people making right turns on red,” said Burton, who medically retired from the US Navy from blindness after serving over 28 years. “I get ready to step out and she’s in front of me,” said the veteran.
