With sadness we announce the passing of Jack Halterman, adoring husband, loving father, proud grandfather and true gentleman. Jack lived in Leesburg and prior to that was a 50-year resident of Ravensworth Farm in Springfield. Jack passed away on July 7, 2024 at 89.

Jack was born to Rex and Crete Halterman in Aurora, Missouri and grew up with two older brothers, Russell and Danny, all of whom predeceased him. He was a 1952 graduate of Aurora High School and a 1958 graduate of Southwest Missouri State University. After college, he served in the Army and in January 1963, he married the love of his life, Virginia Wilkerson, in Aurora.

Jack and Ginny came to Washington in 1963 where he began work as an Imagery Analyst for CIA in the National Photographic Interpretation Center. He worked across geographies and geopolitical issues, being particularly proud of his work in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War, the Middle East during the 1970s, and the Gulf War in the early 1990s. He also served three extended-duty temporary assignments. He retired in 1994 as deputy division chief overseeing imagery analysis directed against weapons proliferation and transfers.

Jack was an avid golfer his whole life. He enjoyed genealogy and history, with the Civil War a keen interest. He also tinkered around the house and yard where his attempts to grow grass in shady areas were legendary. He and Ginny also traveled with the Outer Banks being a regular and favorite destination.

Jack is survived by his wife, Ginny, of Leesburg, and two children, Matthew and his wife Carolyn of Urbana and Alix Smith and her husband, Douglas, of Leesburg. He absolutely adored his grandsons, Patrick, William, and Jackson and so enjoyed time with them. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and long-time friends from Aurora, Ravensworth, and CIA. The family also recognizes the staff at Poet’s Walk in Leesburg as well as Capital Caring Hospice, both of whom took wonderful care of him over the past year.

Join us in celebrating Jack’s life on Thursday, July 25, 2024 from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. at Tuscarora Mill restaurant in Leesburg, Virginia. We invite you to drop by anytime during these hours. Jack will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
