Robert Eugene Long, age 90, of Sarcoxie, Missouri, formerly of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, passed away at 10:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Sarcoxie Nursing Center in Sarcoxie, Missouri. He was born February 14, 1934, in Mt. Vernon, the third of six children of John Herbert Basil and Elva Lee (Lewis) Long.

Bob was a 1952 graduate of Mt. Vernon High School. That same year, he enlisted and served in the United States Marine Corps. He retired in 1992 from the KPL Gas Service Company of Joplin, Missouri, where he was the General Operating Supervisor for the Field Operations Departments. He was an active member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Mt. Vernon. Bob was active for many years in the Boy Scouts as an adult leader and served as the district 3 Commissioner.

On November 15, 1952, Bob married Janet Gayle Mosher, in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. She preceded him in death on November 11, 2016.

Bob is survived by his two sons, Randy Long and his wife, Cindy, of Austin, Texas and Scot Long and his wife, Mary, of Pittsburg, Kansas; four grandchildren, Brice Long and his wife, Jennifer, Kylie Thomas and her husband, John, Kandra Smith and her husband, Lance, and Taylor Long; ten great-grandchildren and one sister, Glenda Vandergrift and her husband, Marion, of Carterville, Missouri.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Elva Long; his wife Janet; two sisters, Virginia Brady, and Ruth Souza; two brothers, Paul, and Steve Long and one grandson, Dennis Brian Long.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Rev. Jack Daniels will conduct the service. A private burial will be at the Summit Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made payable to Camp Childress (Scout Camp) in care of the funeral home.
