Springfield police: Two dead in Friday morning shooting on Chestnut Street

Springfield Police are investigating an overnight shooting that left one person dead and another with life-threatening injuries on Friday, July 5, 2024.

A shooting early Friday morning left two people dead, according to the Springfield Police Department.

Officers responded to a report of a man who had been shot at around 3 a.m. in the 1600 block of West Chestnut Street, according to SPD. When officers arrived, they found a man, Jack Osborn, and a woman, Melissa Evans, who had been shot in front of a residence. Osborn, 46, died at the scene and Evans, 44, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. A little before noon, the SPD posted that Evans also died from her injuries.

According to SPD this is currently an active investigation. There is no suspect information at this time and it is believed to be an isolated incident.

This is Springfield’s fifth homicide investigation in 2024, which includes the sixth and seventh victims for the year.
