Police search for St. Louis man suspected in Springfield double homicide

The Springfield Police Department is looking for a suspect in a holiday weekend double homicide. The Springfield Homicide Unit identified Jeffrey Garrett, 39, from St. Louis as the suspect, though he is not currently in custody, according to an SPD news release.

On Friday, July 5, officers responded to a report of a man who had been shot at around 3 a.m. in the 1600 block of West Chestnut Street. Once on scene, officers found Jack Osborne, 46, and Melissa Smith, 44, who was previously identified as Melissa Evans, with gunshot wounds. Osborne died at the scene. Smith was taken to a hospital and later died from her injuries.

The Springfield Police Department identified Jeffrey Garrett, 39, of St. Louis, as a suspect in a shooting on July 5, 2024, that left two people dead.

Garrett was charged Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action with no bond, according to the release.
