3-Year-Old Dies After Falling Out of Manhattan Apartment Window

A three-year-old in New York City died Friday after he fell from the window of an apartment building.

The boy, who was identified as Daniel Galeas, was found on Friday morning. Police said they responded to a call of an unconscious child at 208 West 133 Street, in Harlem, just before 10:30 a.m.

"Upon arrival, responding officers were informed by EMS that they encountered an unconscious and unresponsive 3-year-old male in the rear of the location with injuries indicative of a fall from an elevated position," the New York City Police Department (NYPD) said in an email to Newsweek describing the incident.

The boy was on the fourth floor of the apartment building and jumping on a bed when he fell, his grandmother told NBC New York.

EMS staff brought him to NYC Health and Hospitals/Harlem, where he was pronounced dead.

"The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing," the NYPD stated.

The boy would have turned four years old on Monday, according to NBC New York. His grandmother told the station that the boy's aunt was watching him and other children at the time of the incident, but it's unclear at this time if any adults were with the boy when he fell.

In a similar incident in June, a three-year-old boy fell five stories out of an apartment building in New York City. The boy, Jose Garcia, survived the fall. His fall was softened by a store awning, local news station WCBS reported at the time.

"He was right here. I was on that table eating, and my aunt was there making me breakfast, my two friends were here," Jose's sister, Mia Jimenez, told the station, translating for his aunt.

"From one minute he just moved to the room and went to the bed and he started taking the things we have there—he started taking it off, and then he just fell," Jimenez said.

In July, a four-year-old boy was sent to the hospital in critical condition after he fell from a 10th story balcony in the Bronx, according to another local station, NY1.
