Drivers Claim Trend in Gas Station Wrongly Putting Diesel in Tanks

Customers at Murphy USA gas stations have claimed in recent weeks that they've received diesel fuel instead of regular gasoline when filling up their vehicles.

A driver in Claremore, Oklahoma, said that her car was filled with diesel at a Murphy USA location, news station KOTV reported.

"Noticed after driving my car just a little ways it started bogging down, my jeep was bogging down, not having power, kind of spurting, things like that," the customer, Kelly Watson, told the news station.

She said she learned that others had reported similar problems and that she may have to spend hundreds of dollars to repair her car after the alleged mixup. But she told KOTV that she hopes the company will cover the costs.

"It's just aggravating, nobody has that type of money, you go get gas, you trust it to be gas," Watson said.

Last month in Wichita Falls, Texas, news station KFDX reported that several people claimed their cars were filled with diesel instead of normal gasoline at a Murphy USA station, noting complaints on Facebook at the time.

In response, a spokesperson for Murphy USA told the station: "The unleaded pumps were not dispensing diesel fuel. There was an equipment failure we are working to resolve." Newsweek has reached out to Murphy USA for comment.

Also last month, several customers at a Murphy USA station in Lafayette, Georgia, said they unknowingly filled their gas tanks with diesel fuel instead of unleaded gas.

"As I was driving, I noticed the car felt like it didn't have power to go," one of the customers, Dana Hallman told Fox 17. "I made a couple of stops and it wouldn't start back up...Finally, it did and I was able to make it home but it would barely run."

In a statement to Georgia news station WTVC published on July 1, a company spokesperson said: "Murphy USA has become aware that diesel fuel was mistakenly delivered and placed into an underground storage tank at the Murphy USA location on Highway 27 in LaFayette, GA and that several customers this morning unknowingly filled their unleaded fuel vehicles with diesel fuel."

"We sincerely regret that this mistake occurred and intend to make things right for all impacted customers."

The reported diesel gas mix-ups have come as the U.S. has seen record high gas prices in recent months. However, prices have come down, and as of last week, 25 states were recording average gas prices below $4 a gallon.
