Full List of Pet Food Recalls as Warnings Issued to Customers

There have been at least six recalls for pet food products issued this year, according to Newsweek's review of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) records.

The recalls have included both dry and raw food products for cats and dogs. Some of the items have also posed a risk to owners' health and well-being. There have been no reported illnesses in animals or people in connection to any recalled products this year.

Newsweek previously reported that pet food recalls have been on the rise in recent years. Last year, the FDA reported 16 recalls for items including dry and raw pet food and liquid probiotics for animals. There were 16 total recalls reported in 2021 and 2022 combined.

Other pet-related products that have been recalled in 2024 include Spectrum Brands Pet Care's Pet Fur deShedding Conditioner, which, according to a release from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, was pulled off shelves due to fears that owners could be exposed to bacteria found growing inside the product's container once open.

Below is an overview of the recalls issued this year for pet food products.

July

The most recent pet food recall was announced for several products distributed by Viva Raw, an online subscription site, over the risk of possible listeria contamination. Five dog and cat food products that contain raw turkey were included in the recall warning published to the FDA site on Monday.

The FDA also provided an update on the same day on a previous recall for Vitakraft Sun Seed Inc.'s Vita Prima Hedgehog Food, which was first recalled June 22. The company has expanded its recall to include five products with the UPC code 0-51233-34792-9 and seven additional products with the UPC code 0-87535-40060-4. The products were all sold in a 25-ounce package and have varying expiration dates.

June

On June 21, a recall was issued for 3,551 bags of Green Tripe dog treats out of fears that the items could be contaminated with "metal objects," which may pose a risk to both pets and their owners. The items were sold nationwide in retail outlets and online from February to May.

May

Mars Petcare US issued a recall in May for select bags of its Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition grilled steak and vegetable-flavored dry dog food out of fears that some items could contain the presence of loose metal. The recall included 315, 44-pound bags of dry dog food under lot code 410B2TXT02. The bags were sold by Walmart in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas and online from the supermarket chain's website.

February

Viva Raw had another recall issued in February for a batch of its duck recipe products after the FDA detected the presence of salmonella and listeria. Three dog and cat food products were included in the recall and were first shipped to customers on October 24, 2023.

January

A recall was issued early in the year for D&D Commodities' Pet Products Premium Parrot Food due to potential salmonella contamination. Only one lot number—102525G—of the product was included in the recall. The items were sold in 4-pound clear jars and distributed by retailers in 20 states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Virginia.

Correction 07/03/24, 3:19 p.m. ET: This article was updated to reflect that the recall for Spectrum Brands Pet Care's Pet Fur deShedding Conditioner was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
