Hyundai released a teaser image of the Ioniq 6 all-electric sedan on Tuesday, referring to it as an Electrified Streamliner. The Ioniq is a follow-up to the 2022 Ioniq 5 crossover.
According to the company, the sketch represents its designers' "commitment to satisfy both aesthetic and functional needs of customers in the electric mobility era."
Sitting on its E-GMP electric vehicle (EV) platform, the Ioniq 6 sketch emphasizes aerodynamics and an elongated wheelbase.
The sketch shows a car that's cohesive with lines stretching unbroken from front to back. The car would be a smoothed out oval without the presence of a rear spoiler lip.
Hyundai says that the Ioniq 6 is going to be based on its Prophecy concept car, which debuted in 2020 and was on display at IAA Mobility 2021.
The Prophecy has many of the same characteristics as the sketch, though more fleshed out. The front fascia has a simple, uniform design that isn't broken up on the way to the rear.
The rear spoiler lip remains, with most of the real estate below that being taken up by green and red lights.
Counter-hinged doors open to reveal a large cabin, evoking the "living space" feeling that the company and others have been concentrating on with concept cars.
Expected to follow the Ioniq 6 is the Ioniq 7, slated to fit into the three-row SUV segment when it comes to market in 2024.
The Ioniq 5, which was released last year, is a crossover with more jagged styling than the Ioniq 6. A diagonal line stretching from the upper side of the front door to the lower end of the passenger door is one of its unique styling elements.
When it's released, the Hyundai Ioniq 6 will have very few direct competitors. At its expected price point, most automakers are releasing hatchbacks and crossovers for their EV offerings.
The 2022 Tesla Model 3 is the closest competitor, while the 2022 Nissan Leaf and 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV will probably undercut them both.
In the premium segment, there are several EV sedan options already available with more on the way. The 2022 Tesla Model S, 2022 Porsche Taycan, 2022 BMW i4 and 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS.
Hyundai plans to reveal more details about the Ioniq 6 later this month.
