A mother of four was fatally shot in Brooklyn, New York, on Thursday night after she was struck by stray bullets while commuting home from work.
A spokesperson for the New York Police Department (NYPD) told Newsweek that the incident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. ET when officers were dispatched due to reports of a person shot near 1523 St. Johns Place in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn.
When police officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a 54-year-old woman who had suffered two gunshot wounds to the chest. Additionally, police also found a 30-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the arm at the scene, the spokesperson told Newsweek.
The woman was commuting home from work when she was shot, and the incident occurred near her residence, police said.
The NYPD spokesperson said that both the 54-year-old woman and the 30-year-old man were transported to a nearby hospital by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel shortly after police arrived on the scene. The woman was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to police.
The male victim that was also found on the scene was listed in "stable condition" the NYPD spokesperson told Newsweek.
According to the NYPD, no arrests have been made in connection to the incident.
Pix 11 news in New York reported that an NYPD spokesperson said that police believe that the woman was not the intended target in the shooting and she was struck by a stray bullet.
While the NYPD has yet to release the names of either of the victims, the woman's son, Janse Joseph, 24, told Pix 11 that his mother's name was Limose Dort.
Joseph told Pix 11 news that he was at work when the shooting occurred and he started to become concerned when his girlfriend informed him at 10 p.m. ET that his mother was not home yet.
"She usually comes [home] around 8:30 p.m.," Joseph told Pix 11. "I tried to call her, and she didn't answer the phone. My girlfriend called me back and said, 'Something has happened outside' and my mom got shot."
Joseph continued, "I didn't know that my mom would die so soon.… The thing that I regret the most is the fact that she doesn't know how much I love her."
According to Pix 11, Joseph said that his mother had three other children, all of whom still live in Haiti.
Shortly after the incident occurred, the woman's family created a GoFundMe page for family and friends to pay tribute.
