America's Best Plastic Surgeons 2024

Elective plastic surgery is more popular than ever.

Data released in November 2023 from global intelligence platform Statista showed that 900,000 cosmetic surgical procedures took place in 1997 in the U.S.—and by 2022, that number had grown to more than 1.87 million. A greater number of options for safe, less invasive surgeries and an increasing cultural emphasis on self-care and confidence, according to Statista, have been responsible for increasingly positive societal attitudes toward plastic surgery.

For patients who are considering plastic surgery and looking to find the most highly rated specialists, Newsweek has partnered with Statista for the fourth annual ranking of America's Best Plastic Surgeons. In total, 379 surgeons were recognized across five types of procedures: breast augmentation, liposuction, facelift, rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery. The top 30 in each category are ranked from 1 to 30, and the rest are listed alphabetically.

To compile the ranking, thousands of medical experts with knowledge of plastic surgery were invited to an online survey in March and April that resulted in the collection of more than 8,400 votes for plastic surgeons representing all surgery categories. Only surgeons from the 20 states with the most plastic surgeons were included in the ranking, and surgeons who offer only reconstructive or non-elective corrections were excluded from consideration.

We hope the ranking's comprehensive approach makes the search for a plastic surgeon an easier one.

Over 8,400 votes were collected and analyzed for each procedure.

Scoring Model

A score was calculated for each surgeon based on the number of recommendations, a quality assessment and relevant certification.

In-State and Out-Of-State Recommendations

Participants were asked to name the leading plastic surgeons for each cosmetic procedure, both within and outside their respective states. The order in which recommendations were provided was relevant to the ranking (number 1 has the highest weight). Self-recommendations were not allowed and led to disqualification. Analysis of in-state and out-of-state recommendations for each plastic within 5 cosmetic procedures. Each plastic surgeon was assigned a score based on the number of weighted recommendations. In-state and out-of-state recommendations constitute 45 percent of the overall score. The in-state recommendations of plastic surgeons from the survey period March to April 2023 were also considered.

Quality Score
For in-state recommendations, participants were asked to assess quality of care (e.g., consultation with doctor, complications, follow-up, outcome). For each recommended plastic surgeon, participants rated quality of care on a scale from 1 ("poor") to 10 ("excellent"). A quality score was assigned to each plastic surgeon. This score accounts for 15 percent of the total score.

Certification Score
The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) accreditation is a voluntary credential for plastic surgeons in the U.S. Plastic surgeons must have completed appropriate training and passed oral and comprehensive written exams covering all plastic surgery procedures. Plastic surgeons receive 5% towards their total score if they have a ABPS certification.

The rankings are comprised exclusively of plastic surgeons that are eligible regarding the scope described in this document. The ranking is the result of an elaborate process which, due to the interval of data-collection and analysis, is a reflection of the last 12 months. Furthermore, events preceding or following the period May 1, 2023 – April 30, 2024, and/or pertaining to individual persons affiliated/associated to the facilities were not included in the metrics. As such, the results of this ranking should not be used as the sole source of information for future deliberations. The information provided in this ranking should be considered in conjunction with other available information about plastic surgeons or, if possible, accompanied by a visit to the clinic. The quality of plastic surgeons that are not included in the rankings is not disputed.
