The owner of Banksy's 'Umbrella Girl' is ‘committed to the preservation and protection’ of the beloved painting

In March, promoters announced that a big, splashy “immersive and digital”exhibit devoted to the British street art superstar Banksy was coming to New Orleans in June. The producers didn’t immediately announce where the "World of Banksy" exhibit would take place, but promised to do so a week or two before showtime.

Despite the vagueness, Banksy fans bought $29 advance tickets and awaited further word. Now, just two days before the scheduled June 28 opening, they still don’t know where the show’s supposed to take place. Or if the show’s going to take place at all.

Ticketholder Ann Malone, who contacted the producer, Lumio Studio of Portland Oregon, said she received an automatic reply that promised more information about the show would be forthcoming, but also warned that “due to staffing shortages and higher than usual volume, response times may be delayed.” She’s heard nothing more.

Meanwhile, way up in Calgary, Canada, the “World of Banksy” show has caused considerable consternation. According to reporting by CTV News, the exhibit was first scheduled for April, then rescheduled in June, and now rescheduled for mid-October. Lumio informed frustrated ticket holders that the delay was due to Banksy art pieces being tied up in U.S. Customs as they were shipped across the border.

Though the “World of Banksy” website remains accessible, attempts to buy tickets to the New Orleans show led to a page that read “There is no event here.” An email seeking information from the Lumio company bounced back.

Banksy is the most popular artist of the 21st century, his works sell for millions, and he counts Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie among his collectors. Despite that, the former graffiti writer, has succeeded in preserving his anonymity.

Banksy is especially dear to New Orleans. In 2008, he slipped quietly into the city, leaving behind several stencil murals, many of which were tailor-made for the post-Katrina milieu.
