A man was shot and killed by Mandeville police Friday after he shot a woman and pointed a gun at officers who were responding to a welfare check, the St. Tammany Sheriff's Office said.

Officials say Mandeville officers arrived at home in the 700 block of Heavens Drive on Friday evening for a welfare check, where they found a woman screaming.

The Sheriff's Office said the woman ran outside of the home and told officers a man inside was threatening to kill her. The man then came outside and shot the woman multiple times.

An officer responding to the scene shocked the man with a Taser after asking him to drop his weapon. The man then pointed a gun at the officer, authorities say, and a second officer opened fire on him.

The man and the woman were taken to the hospital following the shootings, where they both died.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

“This is an example of the dangers members of law enforcement face every day when they put on their uniform,” Sheriff Randy Smith said in a statement.

No other information about the shootings was immediately available, including the names of the two victims.
