The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office has identified the man who died Tuesday afternoon after he was hit by an Amtrak train while walking on a set of railroad tracks in Metairie.

Joseph Pecoraro III, 30, of River Ridge, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, the Canadian National train yard located in the 6900 block of Stable Drive

Pecoraro was trespassing by walking on the tracks in the yard about 2:15 p.m. when he was hit by the City of New Orleans train, which was bound for Chicago, according to Amtrak officials.

The train was stopped more than three hours as the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office investigated the accident.

None of the train's 114 passengers and crew members were injured, Amtrak said.
