After making landfall on the Texas coast overnight Monday as a Category 1 storm, Hurricane Beryl has moved in another direction and weakened into a tropical depression.

Beryl — the first named hurricane to form in the Atlantic this season — has become a tropical storm located inland over Arkansas, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami early Tuesday morning. The tropical storm is not expected to turn into another strong storm in the next seven days, NHC forecasters said, as it moves northeast at 23 mph.

On Monday, the hurricane unleashed heavy rainfall and strong, damaging winds near Matagorda, Texas. It broke records as the earliest Category 5 hurricane to form in the Atlantic.

Despite being hundreds of miles away from the state, portions of Louisiana were heavily impacted by the storm.

The northwest portion of Louisiana faced the biggest threats, as reported tornados and showers swept through the region and left 14,000 without power. On Monday night, the Louisiana Department of Health said that a woman in Benton died as a result of the storms.

Southeast Louisiana, specifically New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette, was under a coastal flood advisory Monday morning. While the advisory has been lifted in these areas, residents can still expect showers and thunderstorms Tuesday.
