OXFORD, Ala. — The Delgado baseball team took a 9-1 win in eight innings over Wallace State on Thursday to open play in the NJCAA South District tournament — and in doing so, they helped longtime coach Joe Scheuermann reach yet another milestone.

Scheuermann earned his 1,177th victory at Delgado, tying the state collegiate win record held by the late Tony Robichaux, who finished with 1,177 in a career that included long stints at McNeese State and UL.

Scheuermann can break the record when his Dolphins play again at 7 p.m. Friday, facing the winner between Snead State and Coastal Alabama South.

The eventual winner of the eight-team South District tournament will advance to the NJCAA Division World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.

On Thursday, Delgado broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning when Walker Bazile advanced on a single and scored on an error. Rhett Centanni’s double scored Casey Artigues and Jack Walker’s single scored Centanni to give the Dolphins the 4-1 lead.

Delgado (39-15) then sent 10 batters to the plate in the sixth to add four runs, including a sacrifice fly by Centanni and an RBI single by Walker. In the eighth, Artigues reached on a leadoff single, advanced on a single by Centanni and scored on a single and overthrow by Jack Walker for the 9-1 mercy-rule win.

Artigues, Centanni and Walker went a combined 10 for 14 at the plate. Luke Barbier went the distance, pitching eight innings and striking out five to lead the Dolphins to the win.
