WATCH: Highland Council use robot to ensure sports are played pitch perfect

Sports pitches across the Highlands are using technology to help mark out areas of play to allow games and matches to take place.

Highland Council are utilising a robotic liner machine to mark out pitches for football, rugby and shinty as well as running tracks.

The device works by setting precise calculations for the playing area of a certain sport and then loading it with paint.

Highland Council were spotted using the device at Bught Park in Inverness marking out a football pitch on Thursday.

The robot has been in operation throughout this summer.

A spokeswoman for the Highland Council said the device can be used to mark playing areas for a variety of sports.

It will also be utilised at venues across the Highland Council region.

She said: "Our Amenity Services is using a new robotic liner machine since this summer which is designed to mark all types of sports pitches, easier, faster, and more efficiently.

“Due to its autonomous design the robotic liner can paint an entire field, making line marking easier and more efficient.

“After taking minutes to set up, the operative can then carry out other duties while the liner operates.

“There is one line machine which can be used Highland-wide.

“It is being used for shinty, rugby, football and sports tracks."
