L’adjectif récurrent était autrefois considéré comme un faux ami calqué sur l’anglais recurrent (« appearing or occurring again or periodically »).
Il est pourtant attesté au sens de « qui se répète, réapparaît ». Il vient du latin recurrens, qui signifie « qui revient en courant ».
Si on le désire, on peut préférer employer :
- fréquent
- périodique
- qui revient souvent/fréquemment
- qui revient d’année en année
- qui se répète
- qui réapparaît
- qui se reproduit
Exemples
- un problème récurrent
- un thème récurrent
- des fièvres récurrentes
- faire un rêve récurrent
- un personnage récurrent dans une émission de télévision
