Tomb Raider, More Square Enix Games Coming to Nvidia Shield

Shield owners can stream the titles for $7.99 a month

Hands On with Nvidia Shield

Several popular Square Enix games are coming to the Nvidia Shield.

Tomb Raider is the first of five titles. It's available now via the GeForce Now game subscription service, which costs $7.99 per month and is only available to owners of the Shield tablet or set-top box. The platform allows unlimited streaming of more than 80 game titles, including today's additions.

Sleeping Dogs, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Quantum Conundrum, and Murdered: Soul Suspect are also on the schedule.

Rise of the Tomb Raider, released in January, is the successor the very popular Tomb Raider. It's only available for PCs, Xbox One and Xbox 360, but PCMag's Gabriela Zamora found gameplay to be very similar, so Shield owners won't miss much.

The updated Nvidia Shield Tablet ($599.00 at Amazon) , meanwhile, won a PCMag's Editors' Choice award when it debuted in 2014. It's one of the most powerful tablets we've tested, at least as far as graphics performance is concerned. It was also among the first mobile devices to use the Tegra K1 CPU.

Likewise, the Shield Android TV ($269.37 at Amazon) is worth a look for gamers. The latest version was released in May 2015 along with GRID, the predecessor to the GeForce Now game streaming subscription.

One of the main gripes with both devices has been the limited number of available game titles compared to competitors like the Nintendo 3DS XL or PlayStation Vita Slim ($0.00 at Amazon) . Today's announcement should help tip the scales in Nvidia's favor; with the Square Enix additions, "GeForce Now will include more than 80 games members can play instantly on Shield," Nvidia said.

GRID was free for much of last year, and GeForce Now has a similar trial period: new users get three months free before the $7.99-a-month fee kicks in.

I’ve covered the consumer tech world as an editor, reporter, and analyst since 2015.

I’ve evaluated the performance, value, and features of hundreds of personal tech devices and services, from laptops to Wi-Fi hotspots and everything in between. I’ve also covered the launches of dozens of groundbreaking technologies, from hyperloop test tracks in the desert to the latest silicon from Apple and Intel.

I've appeared on CBS News, in USA Today, and at many other outlets to offer analysis on breaking technology news.

Before I joined the tech-journalism ranks, I wrote on topics as diverse as Borneo's rain forests, Middle Eastern airlines, and Big Data's role in presidential elections. A graduate of Middlebury College, I also have a master's degree in journalism and French Studies from New York University.
