Progress to 'down stay'

Progress to 'down stay'

Now that your dog is consistently offering the down on cue, delay the click for a few seconds to extend the time that he remains in position. He will quickly learn that no treat appears if he moves before he hears the click. If your dog moves, as mentioned in 'sit stay', give him the opportunity to work it out for himself. If he corrects himself and offers the down again, click and treat after he has maintained the position for a few seconds. However, if he is struggling to understand, it may be necessary to encourage him to 'down' again by offering the down signal. Gradually extend the time that you are asking him to maintain the down, until he can do it for up to about three minutes but vary the times so that they do not become predictable. Use the stay cue described in the 'sit stay' exercise.
