CFL Week 18 Offensive Line Rankings: Alouettes climb to No. 2

Few things are more important to a team’s success than the quality of its offensive line. Disastrous lines, or even disastrous weak-link mismatches, can determine the outcome of games, while strong units give an incredible advantage to an offense.

This CFL season, we will be keeping track of PFF’s offensive line rankings as well as highlighting the biggest weak-link player and their upcoming opponent to identify any obvious matchup advantage one way or the other.

1. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (No Change)

  • Asotui Eli earned his first CFL start this past week. The rookie had a mixed bag of a game. He was stellar in the run game, earning a 77.5 run-blocking grade (first on the team), but posted a 57.4 pass-blocking grade after allowing four hurries. 
  • Another week means more dominance in the run game for the Blue Bombers. Their offensive line cleared the way for 3.0 average yards before contact last week.

2. Montreal Alouettes (Up 1)

  • Nick Callender was the CFL's top run-blocking offensive lineman last week. He earned an outstanding 86.0 run-blocking grade.
  • The Alouettes climbed back into the top two following their impressive team pass-blocking performance. The unit earned a 73.3 pass-blocking grade this past week. 
Upcoming Week: Edmonton Elks
  • This is a first-time matchup in 2023. The Elks' defense has earned a 66.9 overall grade, a 46.3 run-defense grade and an 83.2 pass-rush grade.

3. Toronto Argonauts (Down 1)

  • It was a tough week for the Argonauts' offensive line. The unit earned a 42.6 pass-blocking grade with five total pressures allowed.
  • Dejon Allen didn't play in the second half, forcing Hunter to slide out to right tackle and Gregor MacKellar to play left guard. Both struggled, with Hunter earning a 52.6 overall grade and MacKellar earning a 53.5 mark.
Upcoming Week: Ottawa Redblacks
  • The Redblacks' pass rush hasn't fared well against the Argonauts this season. Across their previous matchups, Ottawa has earned a 52.8 pass-rush grade.

4. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (No Change)

  • After a rocky first two starts, left tackle Jordan Murray played like a star in the making in his next three. This past week, he had a perfect game in pass protection, earning an 87.1 grade with zero pressures and no negatively graded plays across 28 reps.
  • The group's run blocking was subpar, though. Hamilton earned a team 58.2 run-blocking grade and provided only 1.2 yards before contact on average this past week. 
Upcoming Week: British Columbia Lions
  • The Lions' pass rush has found some success against the Tiger-Cats' offensive line this season. In their only other matchup, the Lions earned a 71.1 pass-rush grade with 14 total pressures.

5. Edmonton Elks (No Change)

  • Brett Boyko recorded a 74.4 overall grade, a 74.2 run-blocking grade and a 74.0 pass-blocking grade this past week.
  • It was a down week for the Elks' offensive line in the run game, with Korte (56.8), Jack-Kurdyla (56.6) and Ivey (48.7) all earning sub-60.0 run-blocking grades.
Upcoming Week: Montreal Alouettes
  • The Alouettes' defense has earned a 90.0 overall grade, a 69.4 run-defense grade and a 78.8 pass-rushing grade this season.

6. British Columbia Lions (No Change)

  • Sukh Chungh returned to action this week, but unfortunately, it did not result in better play from the guard position. Chungh earned a 36.1 pass-blocking grade, allowing three total pressures — including two sacks.
  • The offensive line provided the Lions’ running backs with only 0.6 yards before contact on average last week.
Upcoming Week: Hamilton Tiger-Cats
  • In their previous matchup this season, the Tiger-Cats’ pass rush got past the BC offensive line. They earned a 77.3 pass-rush grade and generated a 69.8% pass-rush win rate.

7. Saskatchewan Roughriders (No Change)

  • It was another week of pass-protection woes for the Roughriders' tackles. Lofton (52.9) and Council (40.3) graded out poorly across their 33 snaps.
  • New left guard Philip Blake had his best performance of this season last week. He earned a 75.1 pass-blocking grade.
Upcoming Week: Calgary Stampeders
  • The Stampeders' pass-rush unit has produced the most success against the Roughriders this season. They have earned a 79.9 pass-rush grade with 13 sacks and 34 total pressures against Saskatchewan.

8. Calgary Stampeders (No Change)

  • The Stampeders were on a bye this past week.
  • On the season, their offensive line ranks last in the CFL with a 47.2 run-blocking grade and eighth with a 48.6 pass-blocking grade.
Upcoming Week: Saskatchewan Roughriders
  • The Roughriders' pass rush has struggled against the Stampeders in 2023. They have earned a 62.6 pass-rush grade, the lowest mark for any defense against Calgary.

9. Ottawa Redblacks (No Change)

  • It was another tough week for the Redblacks' offensive line. Ruby (37.2), Bull (28.7) and Hogan-Saindon (21.3) each recorded sub-40.0 pass-blocking grades across 31 snaps.
  • In his second straight start, Steward played marvelously again. He earned a 68.6 run-blocking grade and a 71.0 pass-blocking grade.
Upcoming Week: Toronto Argonauts
  • The Argonauts have the lowest pass-rush grade against the Redblacks this season. They have earned a 67.1 team pass-rush grade in those matchups.
