1 dead, 8 injured in July Fourth shooting in Southwest Philly, police say

Investigators are looking for a man who opened fire on a gathering from the passenger side of an SUV late Thursday night.

Police are looking for a man who opened fire on a crowd gathered in Southwest Philly on the Fourth of July. A 19-year-old man was killed and seven others, including four juveniles, were wounded.

A 19-year-old man was killed and eight others were injured, including four juveniles, in a mass shooting in Southwest Philadelphia on the Fourth of July, police said. 

Police are looking for a man who fired multiple shots at a pop-up party on the 1900 block of South Salford Street at 11:30 p.m., investigators said. The man opened fire from the passenger side of an SUV that was driving by the area.

Police on a routine patrol initially found 19-year-old man Maurice White, who was shot in the head lying in the middle of the street. Additional police officers arrived at the scene and found others with gunshot wounds. They were taken to a hospital. Other victims were taken for medical treatment in private vehicles. 

The four juveniles who were shot are between 14 and 17 years old, police said. The other five victims are adults. White was pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, police said.

A 23-year-old man who was shot in the right leg, an 18-year-old man who was shot in the left leg, a 21-year-old man who was shot in the left shoulder and an 18-year-old boy who suffered a graze wound to his head were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for treatment, police said. A 24-year-old man who was shot in the left leg was initially taken to Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital and then transported to Penn Presbyterian. They are all in stable condition. 

A 16-year-old boy who was shot in the left thigh, a 15-year-old girl who was shot in the left foot and a 14-year-old boy who was shot in the right thigh are all in stable condition at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, police said. The 14-year-old boy initially was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania – Cedar Avenue in a private vehicle before being transferred to CHOP, police said. 

Police said they do not have a motive for the shooting at this time. Multiple shell casings were found at the scene, but investigators have not recovered any weapons, police said. 

The shooting took place less than a mile from the site where Kimbrady Carriker allegedly killed five people and injured four others last summer in a mass shooting near 56th Street and Chester Avenue.

Earlier Thursday, a man was shot in Mantua, NBC10 reported. Police said they found the man with multiple gunshot wounds around 10:20 a.m. on the 800 block of North 40th Street. 

In another incident, A 20-year-old woman was shot in the left calf on the 500 block of North Douglas Street in Mantua at 10:43 p.m., police said. She is in stable condition after being taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. 

Finally, an 18-year-old was shot in the right leg on Brill Street in Northeast Philadelphia at 1:23 a.m. Wednesday, police said. He was taken to Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital for treatment.
