1992 Albums

After listening to some 300 albums or so from the 40s, 50s, & 60s, I'm jumping ahead to 1992 which was really the year that grunge broke the music world wide open, spilling alternative everything all over the place. With "Smells Like Teen Spirit" leading the way, this is the year that 90s music really began.

Rage Against the Machine, Rage Against the Machine*****: This album was, is, and always shall be as incendiary as the album cover. And I don't care how old I get, I will never grow tired of "fuck you I won't do what you tell me... fuck you I won't do what you tell me... fuck you I won't do what you tell me" in that awesome tone that Zach brought to the song. One of my all-time favorite cathartic moments in rock history. 9/16/17
the cover art for iron maiden's new album, year after we die dark
Iron Maiden, Fear of the Dark*****: Between 1980 and 1992, Iron Maiden did absolutely everything right. That's nine straight studio albums that are as near to metal perfection as they possibly can be and two live efforts that are among the best live albums ever. The end that run with this one which belongs in the conversation of the band's best. I'm starting to formulate an argument that Iron Maiden is the best metal band of all time. 8/5/17
a man with no shirt standing in front of a jail cell door and the words megadeth on it
Megadeth, Countdown to Extinction*****: There was a time when money was short, and I had to make different choices when it came to music. The week this came out, I had twenty dollars until payday, and I could eat fairly well for the rest of week or I could get this and eat Ramen or Mac N Cheese for about 8 days. I chose this. I made the right choice. 7/27/17
an image of a star with the words automatic for the people
R.E.M., Automatic for the People*****: I haven't quite figured out why some of my friends consider this to be the best of R.E.M.'s catalog. It's great, and it fit in perfectly with that era of music when it seemed that melancholy was all the rage. But there are a couple of songs on this one that don't seem to have the same oomph needed to push this over the masterpiece hurdle. It's close, but not quite there. 7/18/17
the cover art for dream theater's new album
Dream Theater, Words and Images*****: I remember the first time I heard "Pull Me Under." I was in the car, delivering pizzas for Papa Johns and this epic song came on the radio. Even though I had arrived in the the neighborhood where I was to drop off some pizzas, I had to drive around a bit to finish listening to the song. It was so fucking awesome with so much power. Every time I hear it I just have to sit and listen. It's that good. Love this album. 7/15/17
the beastie boys check your head album cover
Beastie Boys, Check Your Head****: This is another step forward from these three unlikely rap... and alternative heroes. They took the best of early hip hop, mixed it with funk and metal loops like nobodies' business, and added a punk element that made this one of the most unique sounding groups of all time. I really didn't appreciate them enough back then, but I certainly do now. Excellent work. 7/1/17
there is a large bag sitting on the back of a firetruck's seat
Firehouse, Hold your Fire****: I'm thinking that if I were a member of this band, I'd be pissed at the timing of our appearance on the scene. This is actually a really good album from a band that had musical and performance chops to spare, yet they are also a victim of timing. Grunge hit between this and their first album and though only two years apart... well, who thinks about them now when thinking about that era of music? Too bad because they were better than many of their peers. 3/27/17
the cover art for bonjovi's keep the faith album, which features hands holding
Bon Jovi, Keep the Faith*****: "It feels so good it oughta be illegal, I got my vaccination from a phonograph needle." Truer words might never have been spoken by the one and only Jon Bon Jovi. In a world where rock and roll is my religion, Bon Jovi is certainly one of the high priests and purveyors of peace of my generation. I certainly do have faith in what that man preaches. Long live Bon Jovi, and long live Rock n Roll. 3/12/17
four portraits of men with hats and beards in the middle one is wearing a red hat
The Gits, Frenching the Bully****: What we have on this album is a strong, self-empowered woman singing about issues that are important to women, capturing that Riot Grrl swing. And even though she was strong, fierce, and powerful, a man stalked her, raped her, and then strangled her with no remorse and walked free for another ten years before he was caught. Given Trump's proclivities, I'm afraid that most vile of male domineering tactics will thrive under a Trump presidency. 11/5/16
The Verve Pipe, I've Suffered a Head Injury***: This is not grunge. RYM has the band listed as Alternative Rock and as Post-Grunge which is why it is being included in all of this listening I'm doing at the moment; and they are certainly correct in leaving off the grunge label. Post-grunge is a possibility later on but even on this it's a bit popper than that sub-genre tends to be. The jury is still out but this might be moved to Alt Rock at some point. Still, it's a nice album. 10/25/16 Post Grunge, The Verve, Alt Rock, Smells Like Teen Spirit, 90s Music, Lead The Way, Alternative Rock, In This Moment, Band

the cover art for mother love bone's album, which features pictures and words
Mother Love Bone, Mother Love Bone*****: This is a compilation containing the band's debut album followed by most of the "Shine" ep, and I absolutely love this collection... probably more than each of the earlier discs. In a week that has seen Pearl Jam nominated for the RNRHOF, I can't help but wonder if Andrew had not ODed, would this band be heading into the HOF in PJ's stead. I don't know, and we'll never know. But at least we have this HOF worthy album from that band. 10/25/16
