This statue, though morbid, has got some incredible elements in it. Due to a lack of a decent sized picture of the side of this statue, you miss out on the strong stance of the husband and absolute dead weight of the already killed wife. She hangs from his arm languid and loose, bending so that one believes she would collapse out of the pedestal if her husband's supporting hand is retracted. The event that is occurring before the audience's eyes is shocking as well. Though lacking any gore…

"We often regard the Greeks as the epitome of Civilizations. However, before the great achievement of the Fifth Century BC in Athens and elsewhere, they underwent a period of decline and dislocation. For over three centuries Greece endured a Dark Age when cities were abandoned and society collapsed. However, out of this grim period there emerged trends that contributed to the glories of Greece Civilization." Many famous sculptures are from the Hellenistic period (~323 BCE - 31 CE), which is noted for naturalism and extreme emotion. My loose rule of thumb is that if you see a bust with a twisted grimace, it’s probably from the Hellenistic period 😅 This statue caught my eye in the way that it defies its material with movement and expression • 📷: “Borghese Gladiator” (Agasias, 101 BC), Louvre, Paris, 2018 Famous Greek Sculpture, Famous Sculptures, Hellenistic Period, Rule Of Thumb, Greek Sculpture, Louvre Paris, Artifacts, Greek Statue, Period
