Bolar Mountain Recreation Area at Lake Moomaw offers visitors a fun getaway on Lake Moomaw. The area provides opportunities for plenty of activities, including camping, boating, fishing, and hiking, as well as volleyball and a playground. Anglers fish for brown and rainbow trout, bass, and crappie. The recreation area sits on the northern end of Lake Moomaw, a manmade lake covering 2,530 acres along the Jackson River. The lake's average depth is 80 feet, and it has 43 miles of wooded shoreline. Bolar Mountain boasts 11 miles of hiking trails that lead to two impressive scenic overlooks: Islands Overlook Spur and Grouse Point Overlook. 

Bolar Flats Boat Launch is a two-lane boat launch that is open year-round for public use. The day pass is only good for the day purchased and permits the use of the beach, picnic area, volleyball court, fishing pier, and courtesy dock. The Day Use Pass is only valid sunrise to sunset for the date listed on the pass. This pass does not allow use of any part of the Marina.

This Pass would also be valid from sunrise to sunset at Coles Point Day Use and, Fortney Branch Day Use Boat Launch.

Bolar Flats Boat Launch is an Expanded Amenity Fee Site. A person that holds one of the America the Beautiful passes listed below is eligible for 50% discount on Day Use Fees. The holder and Pass must be present for the discount. These passes cover fees for the passholder and up to three adults per vehicle.

All visitors are required to display a printed copy of their Day Use pass, with QR code visible, on the dashboard of their vehicle for the duration of their stay. Failure to properly display a valid pass may result in a citation.

Cell phone connectivity on the forest is limited, please plan ahead.

If purchasing onsite, please have the Recreation.gov app downloaded prior to arrival. Once purchased please write down confirmation number on provided envelope and post in vehicle dashboard.

You are responsible for your own safety - Watch for natural hazards and be careful.

Day Use passes are non-transferable, non-refundable, cannot be replaced if lost or stolen, and are void if altered or reproduced.

Possession and consumption of alcohol at Forest Service Day Use sites is prohibited - All state laws regarding alcohol possession and consumption must be followed.

Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. Take them with you or lock them up, out of sight.

Collecting or digging for artifacts on Federal Land is a Felony.

This pass does not guarantee parking availability. Parking outside of designated parking spaces is discouraged and visitors who park illegally may be fined and towed. This pass is valid from sunrise to sunset of the date listed on the pass, and only for the date and vehicle specified for this pass.

Modifications, cancellations, and refunds are not available for Day Use or Activity Passes. Pass holders Forfeit the Day Use recreation use fee. This includes fees from Scan & Pay transactions. This Scan & Pay system is designed to operate the same as putting cash into a fee tube and cannot be extracted once it is inserted.
