I really enjoyed this movie. I live in L.A. and am very familiar with the type of Malibu suburban family shown in the film. The film shows the extreme contrast between the circumstances of a Chinese family who has a teenage girl exactly the same age as the Malibu family. The video of Shanghai was fascinating. And the story was simple but very engaging. I think that the critics may not have been impressed as this is a simple movie. But it's very enjoyable, positive, and I learned a lot. It's more a film for the audience than for critics.
