Audience Member Not the best Ben Kingsley film. Not the best Masterpiece Theater production, either. Pretty low quality, possibly from being made in the 80's? Not sure, but I was expecting better on both accounts. Rated 3/5 Stars •  Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/07/23 Full Review Audience Member I tried reading the book in school, but it bored the hell out of me that I stopped right before the third chapter. Yeah, it sucks ass. But when I watched the movie, I found it much more interesting. Kinda hokey at first, but with Ben Kingsley's excellent performance (wow, he can act, but what is he doing in Uwe Boll movies?) and the marvelous cinematography present, it really shows the beauty of this tale that paper alone cannot seem to reveal. The BBC really does a good job condensing all the boring stuff down while making anyone understand what's going on. A few may nitpick at how a few details are excluded (such as how Eppie learns how to cut with the scissors), but I don't think it matters either way. The girl who plays Eppie at age 4 is adorable. Just rewatched it because without the pressure of an impending exam on it I can appreciate it much more. I like this version. The Silas Marner and Eppie characters are awesome. I think the actor playing the Squires son was trying a bit too hard, though. Also, BBC/Masterpiece Theatre sometimes puts together the MOST unattractive covers for their films. I think the politicization of George Eliot as a woman writer in College robbed me of the ability to consider her work on its own terms. Now that I am older and married and a father, the simple beauty of this story was overwhelming for me. This is an exceptional production. Ben Kingsley portrays the transformation of a bitter and lonely man through the simple act of loving and raising a child.
