Critics Consensus

Although it's an objective and handsomely presented take on the Crusades, Kingdom of Heaven lacks depth.

David Ansen Newsweek The miscasting of the lightweight Bloom proves fatal: instead of galvanizing this epic, he sucks the energy out of it. Nov 1, 2007 Full Review Empire Magazine Rated: 3/5 Apr 1, 2006 Full Review Nev Pierce BBC.com It feels spectacularly empty. Rated: 2/5 May 10, 2005 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Storytelling is sacrificed for spectacle, resulting in something breathtakingly epic yet partially unsatisfying and unfortunately forgettable. Rated: 3.5/5 Jul 30, 2020 Full Review Jeff Beck Examiner.com Even with the addition of 45 minutes of new footage, Sir Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven remains a rather uneventful epic with a story that fails to engage. Aidan B A spectacular cast and absolutely golden last act of the film help make "Kingdom of Heaven" a highly entertaining film to watch, even if the journey there feels sudden and lacking any emotional payoff. It somehow managed to feel simultaneously rushed and an absolute drag for a good part of the movie, but the ending really does shine and sees Ridley Scott at his finest. Wish we got to see more of the characters though, especially given that many feel underwritten and undeveloped due to the sheer number of stars involved in this movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review Audience Member I cannot understand why this movie has such bad critics ratings. If they had done their job, it would be "fresh": Awesome pics, good actors, amazing score, despicable villains, exciting battle scenes and a message of hope... Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/19/24 Full Review Audience Member I love how both Christian and Muslims get a fair portrayal, there is no "good" or "bad" religion, there are just asshole characters and good ones. Baldwin of Jerusalem is probably my favorite character of all time and Balian is also good, although he is a bit of a hypocrite. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/10/24 Full Review Tim D The American Version is not nearly as good as the European/Director’s Cut. A huge part of the plot was removed through some scene cutting and stealthy overdubs in the American version, however, I’d still write a solid review for either and it’s the shorter version that I first saw and enjoyed quite a bit. Orlando Bloom does a superb job, the scene work and direction is superb. Not sure where it gets a 43% 🍅 - this is one of those that has me trust the critical review far less. I’m even surprised by the audience reviews as this is a superb film at its core with a very worthwhile message. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 07/03/24 Full Review Nikola M Directors cut of this movie is apsolute classic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review Diego R The story setting and the depiction of Saladin and Baldwin are great. Orlando Bloom does a great work of portraying a man good man, but lost and greatly afflicted by the death of his wife and child. The story of the movie its fairly historical, even for a Hollywood movie, so not much to complain there. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
