Aramide Tinubu Shadow and Act The Martian is a film about human error, the will to survive, and the responsibility that we have as human beings, not just to the work that we dedicate our lives to, but to one another as people. Apr 12, 2017 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association A half-hour into The Martian any seasoned moviegoer can figure out where the plotline in this feel-good movie has to go. That's a shame and the film's biggest transgression. Mar 15, 2017 Full Review Kristen Yoonsoo Kim Complex Despite being marketed under the mainstream bait of a "space movie," The Martian is, more than anything, a love letter to science, without ever feeling like a boring textbook. Rated: 3/5 Feb 23, 2017 Full Review Brendan Cassidy InSession Film Welcome back, Sir Ridley Scott. The Martian was easily one of my favorite blockbusters of the year, a film crowded with a stunning cast in which everyone is given their due. Aug 2, 2024 Full Review Josh Slater-Williams Vague Visages As a piece of sweeping populist entertainment, The Martian is a great success, despite a couple of issues that perturb throughout. Nov 15, 2023 Full Review Edward Porter Sunday Times (UK) Damon has always had a knack for playing ordinary but determined men, and this quality is ideal for the role he has here: a Robinson Crusoe on the red planet. Shane O Excellent movie , great acting from Matt Damon. The only reason it’s not a 5 is because it just lacks that little bit of magic that makes a movie a 5 . Even so it’s one you could watch over and over Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Audience Member This film bares an interesting premise and strong cast but is held back by its slow pacing, and rather "fairytale" ending. The Martian shows great promise from the get-go, with a very tense and exhilarating opening scene that sets the stage for a tense and dramatic film, but ultimately fails to reach that peak again throughout the remainder of its runtime. While the casting was great all around, this film is held predominantly by Damon's acting and the writing of his character. Despite its strong start, The Martian seems to only drag on from there, offering only a few moments of excitement and genuine intrigue. There is a constant lingering presence of the inherent risks involved, and while there are certainly moments of catastrophe, all of them end up being manageable in the end. The film emphasizes how great the risks are but they end up navigating through said risks with relative ease, culminating in a resolution that ends up feeling overly contrived and predictable. If this film was truly realistic then Damon would have almost-certainly been killed when the airlock critically fails, and he is blasted out with it, breaking the glass of his helmet. The cast and plot offer great potential but much of it is squandered on its snail-like pacing and Disneyesque "happy ever after." Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Harshita G I really love this movie. While the book was slightly better, the movie is still very good. The one thing that I have to point out is that they didn't rate the martian properly. They said it's PG-13, but I say it should be R rated because of the two F bombs in the beginning, boosting the language to R. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review p K Not a 5 only because of the no-tether EVA!!! Seriously! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Tijs v A great cast with an amazing performance from Matt Damon. It has tension, humour and a great story. Just all round a very good movie.
