Critics Consensus

The Meg sets audiences up for a good old-fashioned B-movie creature feature, but lacks the genre thrills -- or the cheesy bite -- to make it worth diving in.

Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Director Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) strikes an agreeable tone, avoiding both unnecessary heaviness and self-aware camp. Mar 4, 2020 Full Review Oliver Jones Observer Asks little more of you than to strap in, put away your phone and enjoy watching a freakishly huge prehistoric eating machine terrorize some scientists before it turns its appetite to a beach full of frolickers on floaties. Rated: 2.5/4 Aug 29, 2018 Full Review Anupama Chopra Film Companion ...exactly what we paid for. Rated: 3/5 Aug 24, 2018 Full Review Brittany Patrice Witherspoon Pop Culture Reviews Even though The Meg isn’t the complete shark film that we’ve all wanted, it provides good suspense, great character connections, and allure, resulting in a product that is sincere and amusing. Rated: 3/5 Jul 11, 2024 Full Review David Griffiths Subculture Entertainment Don’t go into it expecting high art or an Oscar winning script, this is The Stath vs The Meg and the film never strays from that. It ain’t Jaws but it ain’t Sharknado either. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 21, 2023 Full Review Alejandro Turdó EscribiendoCine The Meg is an acceptable link in the sharksxplotation chain, recognizing itself as disposable entertainment and knowing its premise isn't the most intelligent but that it's ridiculous enough... Angel cs Enjoyable movie, nothing else Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/05/22 Full Review Jack P The Meg is a Truly Fantastic film and Jason Statham As Always is Stratospheric and the Megalodon is the best shark that has ever existed in the world as well as being the largest in the world I don't understand why this film got a 47% for the critics and a 44% for the public and I must also say that Its sequel, Meg 2 is as good as the 1st film and with the Success of the 2nd film the probability of the creation of Meg 3 is highly probable and I close this review saying The Meg of 2018 is the best shark movie and the best Megalodon movie Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/25/24 Full Review Kim C Did not rate this movie at all unfortunately. Seems like the ‘critics’ were watching something else. Did not even complete the whole movie. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/18/24 Full Review Dave C I said I'd never watch it... but then the 'playing next' feature on Amazon Prime started playing it and I didn't turn it off. Glad I didn't, on the whole, as apart from the first 20mins or so, it is an actually a pretty decent shark flick. There are elements of Titanic and Deep Blue Sea both in terms of the drama, humour, and some of the acting, but it also entertains as well as they both do, so I found myself enjoying it Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/14/24 Full Review Luca H One of my all-time favorites. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review Julian L Great acting and special effects (except for the smaller sharks) but weird sex and the fact that this is supposed to be a horror movie and it ends up being more of an action movie.
