What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is about as original as its title -- but with a cast this talented and effortlessly charming, that hardly matters.

Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint The British actors hold things together, adding charm, sparkle and mischief to a script that pales in comparison to the original. The title seems to prepare you for that anyway. Aug 15, 2019 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association This Exotic Hotel is likable. The first Exotic Hotel was lovable. That's the difference. Mar 15, 2017 Full Review Wesley Morris Grantland The whole movie is caught somewhere between apology and entitlement. Mar 20, 2015 Full Review Richard Propes TheIndependentCritic.com The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is never a bad film. It's simply an unnecessary one. John W Not sure why people seem not to have gotten this movie. It's a brilliantly funny and touching group portrait of old and young seeking happiness, universally understandable and compassionate in virtually every scene. Even the would-be villain from the first movie, Penelope Wilton, gets a second chance here. Far more humane and entertaining than the first one. Open yourself up to this film on its own terms and forget about the rule that sequels have to be inferior. This one is not. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/01/24 Full Review Mateusz C tries to be as good as first one, its not Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/14/23 Full Review Jace E The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel lacked the allure of the first film. Where there was originality in outsourcing old age in the first installment, the premise was rather stale by the end of this film. While I was still somewhat invested in the lives of the core group, I found myself uninterested in many of the subplots (because there were MANY). The one relationship that I was continually interested in was between Sonny and Mrs. Donnelly. The unlikely connection between the two characters was fascinating to me and I wanted to see more from them. In the end, the constant misdirection made me question everything that happened in the film. Rather than lead the viewer through discovery, it felt as though the filmmakers were constantly trying to trick the audience into thinking something incorrect. It was because of this distrust that the moments with depth felt shallow and the rest of the film felt meaningless. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/17/23 Full Review Johann D. M In this comedy-drama sequel directed by John Madden, now co-owners Muriel and Sonny make plans for The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel since the first one is full with its existing long-term residents. While keeping the very talented and effortlessly charming cast of the first film, the movie manages to be entertaining and wonderful, but evidently cannot surpass the first one, even with the help of Richard Gere. The plot is funny, heartwarming and captivating and while some characters are not explored enough, the main ones have interesting storylines and there is even an Indian colourful and gorgeous wedding. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/28/23 Full Review ashley h The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a funny film. It is about Sonny who pursues his expansionist dream of opening a second hotel. Judi Dench and Maggie Smith give fantastic performances. The screenplay is good but a little slow in places. John Madden did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the humor and romance. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a must see. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a follow up with the same feel good cast, beautiful music/scenery, and comfortable story you can enjoy curled up in a blanket.
