Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader A lot of care and attention were obviously devoted to selecting locations, designing sets, and grooming handlebar mustaches. Much less attention went to making one believe that any of the events took place circa 1879. May 10, 2012 Full Review Matt Mueller Empire Magazine Doesn't really cut it in the Western genre. Rated: 2/5 Apr 1, 2009 Full Review Emanuel Levy Variety A tough-talking but soft-hearted tale that is entertaining in a sprawling, old-fashioned manner. Dec 4, 2008 Full Review Zaki Hasan IGN Movies While the Western resurgence of the early ’90s eventually faded away, "Tombstone"'s warm glow has not only persisted but thrived. Dec 26, 2023 Full Review Erik Childress The Friendship Dilemma Podcast Val Kilmer's performance is legendary and a likely reason this film is more fondly remembered as a modern western classic rather than the mess it ultimately becomes in trying to tell a full piece of the legend. Rated: 2.5/4 Sep 29, 2022 Full Review Ed Travis Hollywood Jesus One interesting thing about the story is that it appears that the writers really did include a lot of research and attempted to create a lot of accurate details in the characters and in the story. Misha C Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday was an Oscar worthy performance! How he didn’t win for this role is unfathomable! Kurt Russell is great as Wyatt Earp, along with Sam Elliot and Bill Paxton as the Earp brothers, fantastic. The only miscast character is the role Dana Delaney took on, Josephine Marcus. Great actress but this was not a good fit. Tons of great character actors throughout and fantastic costumes. I’ve watched this movie at least 100 times and never gets old! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Dave Y one of the greatest movies of all time and Val Kilmer delivered one of the greatest performances of all time Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review Jeremy A So over rated. I think people just liked seeing familiar people in their western. The shootouts were mostly lame besides a duel at the end. It wasn't horrible. The jokes were lame. 3.5* Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/22/24 Full Review Marilu V I've seen most versions of the Tombstone story and this is by far my favorite. The fall following Tombstone's opening my husband and I visited both Bisbee with the Copper Queen mine and Tombstone. We went to the opera house in Tombstone which is surprisingly well portrayed in the movie and which now has a small museum like display of the towns infamous history. I was surprised to find that some of the writings of the period were already myth building making the truth of what happened there difficult to discern. If you are looking for a rendition of the tawdry life in a silver town with all its ugliness Tombstone is not for you any more than Casalanca is for history seekers of that time period. Yet both these pieces remind me of one another capturing time and place with the wit of the dialogue and the vibrant portrayals of the characters. Val Kilmers finest work as well as Kurt Russell, Powers Boothe, Sam Elliott, Dana Delaney, Michael Biehn and the rest of a fine cast including the deep, penetrating voiceover of Robert Mitchum make this a repeat favorite of mine that I as well as reviewers who have written before me can quote along with the characters verbatim. Five stars for the entertainment value and outstanding filmography that stands the test.of.time. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/13/24 Full Review David W An immensely good western, which outside of a very rare few, is for me one of the very best ever made. It's beautifully directed and an all star cast do amazing work but despite all the other phenomenally good acting on show here (Russell especially), it's Val Kilmer who is so unforgettable as Doc Holliday that you always remember him first when the movie is mentioned. One of those movies that you really do need to see before you die. You're no daisy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Audience Member Genuinely one of my favorite westerns of all time, while not entirely accurate it is incredibly entertaining and quotable. Well acted and star studded. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
