At his mother's funeral, uptight banker Henry Pulling (Alec McCowen) meets an eccentric woman claiming to be his aunt, Augusta Bertram (Maggie Smith). After the ceremony, the two go to her apartment - where a gruesome package arrives containing a severed finger and a ransom note for the release of Augusta's former lover, Ercole Visconti (Robert Stephens). As they travel across Europe to the borders of Turkey and into North Africa, Henry and Augusta tangle with deception, authorities and death.

One of George Cukor's last (and least impressive) pictures, this version of Graham Greene's eccentric comedy is thematically similar to Auntie Mame but suffers from Maggie Smith's overly stylized turn and lack of rapport with Alec McCowen as her nephew.

Maggie Smith's character was very weird and nervous. Her nephew: pretty bland, but the real shining star of this movie was the super-cute Cindy Williams! IMO.

I have tried at least four times to watch this. I can never figure out what the hell is happening or follow anything. How did a potentially fun film, from a great source, become such a muddled bore?

George Cukor's Travels With My Aunt seemed dated even when I first saw it back in the 70s, shortly after its release, as many of the scenes seem to have the same cinematic sensibility of the films Cukor directed thirty years earlier. Now viewed almost fifty years later, it comes across as silly, unfocused and totally unnecessary…and still dated. The plot is more exhausting than entertaining, many of the scenes (and even shots within some scenes) are pointless and go nowhere, and the puzzling Oscar-nominated performance by Maggie Smith seems overly theatrical and a bit embarrassing. At least some of the scenery is nice, but that's about all that Travels With My Aunt has going for it.

Great costumes and a little fun from Maggie Smith. I have tried getting through this in one sitting without success. A friend who I watched it with (who like me, knows and loves Cukor’s work) kept asking ‘Huh? What is he traveling with her for? What is she talking about? What the hell is going on?’. Should have been grand and stylish (and likely would have been far better made in any decade than the 70’s) but it’s just pretty bad.
